                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, February 4, 1995, marks a significant milestone in
    1-2  the life of Weldon "Stoney" Phillips, who on that day will
    1-3  celebrate the momentous occasion of his 80th birthday; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Born February 4, 1915, in Arp, Texas, this dynamic
    1-5  individual attended Pasadena High School, where he demonstrated
    1-6  exceptional athletic and leadership abilities as a captain of the
    1-7  football team; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, He then attended Southwest Texas State University
    1-9  and continued to excel both on the gridiron and in the classroom,
   1-10  serving as cocaptain of the Bobcat football squad and earning his
   1-11  degree; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Motivated by his continuing love of athletics,
   1-13  Mr. Phillips went on to pursue a career in coaching; he
   1-14  successfully helmed teams in a variety of sports at Cedar Bayou,
   1-15  Peacock Military Academy in San Antonio, Beeville High School,
   1-16  Harlingen High School, and Pasadena High School, instilling in all
   1-17  his charges the qualities of dedication, cooperation, and
   1-18  sportsmanship; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Adept at administration as well as athletics, he
   1-20  served as athletic director for the Pasadena Independent School
   1-21  District from 1957 to 1979, and during his productive tenure in
   1-22  that demanding position, he oversaw the construction of Pasadena
   1-23  Memorial Stadium, an auxiliary football stadium, and a track and
   1-24  baseball field; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Mr. Phillips has given freely of his time and
    2-2  energies as president and director of the Texas Athletic Directors
    2-3  Association and director of the Texas High School Coaches
    2-4  Association, and also has been an active member of the Pasadena
    2-5  Masonic Lodge No. 1155 and the Southwest Texas Hall of Honor; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, As a fitting tribute to his many years of devoted
    2-7  service to the cause of athletics, the Weldon "Stoney" Phillips
    2-8  Field House was named in his honor; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, He was supported in all his endeavors by his wife
   2-10  Rosina, with whom he shared more than a half-century of mutual
   2-11  devotion until her passing in 1992; Mr. Phillips takes great joy in
   2-12  the company of his three children, eight grandchildren, and
   2-13  great-grandchild; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, At 80 years of age, this active octogenarian still
   2-15  enjoys life to the fullest, remaining an avid sports fan, a loving
   2-16  father and grandparent, and a trusted friend to all who are
   2-17  privileged to know him; on the occasion of his birthday, it is
   2-18  indeed fitting that we recognize this remarkable gentleman for the
   2-19  joy and happiness he has brought to so many people throughout his
   2-20  lifetime; now, therefore, be it
   2-21        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-22  Legislature hereby pay tribute to Weldon "Stoney" Phillips and
   2-23  extend warmest congratulations to him on the occasion of his 80th
   2-24  birthday; and, be it further
   2-25        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-26  prepared for Mr. Phillips as an expression of high regard by the
   2-27  Texas House of Representatives.
