H.R. No. 141 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, May Poskey Smith will celebrate her 75th birthday 1-2 with family and friends on Saturday, February 11, 1995, at the 1-3 First Baptist Church in Jacinto City; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born February 16, 1920, in the home of her parents, 1-5 Harmon William and William Thomas Electra Kyle Poskey in Humble, 1-6 she graduated in 1938 from Humble High School, where she 1-7 distinguished herself as the drum major of the drum and bugle 1-8 corps; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Following her graduation, she married Franklin 1-10 Herman Smith on July 14, 1938, in Richmond and moved with her 1-11 husband to Jacinto City in 1946, joining the First Baptist Church, 1-12 of which she is still an active member; and 1-13 WHEREAS, The family grew to include three sons, Franklin 1-14 Herman Smith, Jr., Rodney Harmon Smith, and Glenn Kelley Smith, all 1-15 of whom attended the Galena Park school system and graduated from 1-16 Galena Park High School; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Smith's service to their community 1-18 extended to his service on the Galena Park school board of trustees 1-19 and her involvement in PTA and other civic organizations; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith joined the City of Jacinto City in 1965 1-21 as a clerk in the water department, and despite her initial 1-22 inability to stay on the job all day, she eventually was promoted 1-23 to supervisor and, in 1981, became city secretary, a position she 1-24 held until her retirement in 1987; and 2-1 WHEREAS, In her retirement she has remained active in her 2-2 local community both civically and politically, playing an 2-3 important role in the election of council members, mayors, state 2-4 representatives, state senators, and congressmen, even consenting 2-5 to be interviewed by CNN on behalf of her current congressman; and 2-6 WHEREAS, She is the center of the lives of all of her 2-7 grandchildren, Robyn Lynn, Franklin Herman III (Trey), Shell Scott, 2-8 Joshua Kelley, and Chase Scott, and her great-grandson, Daltyn 2-9 Rodney Eugene Rashell; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Her attention to detail and eye for perfection are 2-11 well known, particularly to those sons and grandsons who have 2-12 attempted to assist her in mowing her lawn and have fallen short of 2-13 her high standards; and 2-14 WHEREAS, She continues to remain active in her community, 2-15 stays physically fit, volunteers her time to her church, and is 2-16 fully prepared for her friend Joann Griggs to make good her threat 2-17 to join her in retirement; now, therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-19 Legislature hereby congratulate May Poskey Smith on the occasion of 2-20 her 75th birthday; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-22 prepared for Mrs. Smith as an expression of high regard by the 2-23 Texas House of Representatives.
