H.R. No. 145 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Armando Banda was accorded a great honor recently 1-2 when he was named the recipient of a $5,000 scholarship from the 1-3 Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., and his 1-4 achievement earned for his school the prestigious opportunity to 1-5 host the Horatio Alger Youth Seminar on February 22, 1995; and 1-6 WHEREAS, This scholarship was created to recognize 1-7 individuals whose hard work, honesty, and initiative have enabled 1-8 them to overcome obstacles to success, and Mr. Banda has 1-9 consistently exemplified these high ideals throughout his high 1-10 school career; and 1-11 WHEREAS, After beginning his secondary education in his small 1-12 hometown of Carrizo Springs, Mr. Banda moved to the much bigger 1-13 city of Garland in 1992; such a transition can often be difficult, 1-14 but this self-assured young man took the disruption in stride and 1-15 immediately made numerous friends among his new classmates; and 1-16 WHEREAS, A valued player on the junior varsity football team 1-17 and a student mentor, Mr. Banda was voted Junior Class Favorite by 1-18 his peers and earned the distinction of being named All North 1-19 Garland, an honor conferred by the faculty; as a senior this year, 1-20 he has maintained a B+ average while serving in the Beta Club and 1-21 on the Student Council, while his athletic skill has earned him a 1-22 coveted place on the varsity football team; and 1-23 WHEREAS, In spite of the many demands on his time, this 1-24 industrious individual also has managed to hold down a part-time 2-1 job, and this serves as a testament to Mr. Banda's outstanding 2-2 organizational and time management skills; his vast array of 2-3 commitments has not affected his cheerful nature and positive 2-4 attitude, and Mr. Banda's continual willingness to give of himself 2-5 to help other students has made him a respected leader among his 2-6 peers; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished 2-8 Americans, Inc., is a nonprofit organization dedicated to 2-9 recognizing Americans from all walks of life who have triumphed in 2-10 the face of adversity; the association is named for Horatio Alger, 2-11 Jr., a turn of the century American writer whose novels extolled 2-12 the virtues of perseverance, courage, and hard work; and 2-13 WHEREAS, In demonstrating these fine attributes, Armando 2-14 Banda has set an inspiring example for his friends, fellow 2-15 students, and even his teachers to follow; Mr. Banda will 2-16 undoubtedly achieve great success in his life, and the members of 2-17 this chamber are proud to honor such an outstanding and deserving 2-18 young Texan; now, therefore, be it 2-19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-20 Legislature hereby congratulate Armando Banda on receiving the 2-21 Horatio Alger Scholarship and extend to him warmest best wishes for 2-22 continued success and happiness; and, be it further 2-23 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-24 prepared for Mr. Banda as an expression of highest regard by the 2-25 Texas House of Representatives.
