                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Dr. John Nichols was accorded a great honor when he
    1-2  was named Man of the Year by the Galena Park Chamber of Commerce on
    1-3  January 26, 1995; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Born and reared in Jackson, Michigan, Dr. Nichols
    1-5  studied at Michigan State University, Sam Houston State University,
    1-6  and the University of Oklahoma before entering Baylor College of
    1-7  Medicine in Houston; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, It was there that he met his future wife, also a
    1-9  medical student, and introduced himself by offering to flip a coin
   1-10  to determine which of the pair would buy the other a soda;
   1-11  unfortunately, he proceeded to lose eight consecutive nickels to
   1-12  her, but he bought her a soda with his last coin, and the couple
   1-13  has been together ever since; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Dr. Nichols began his distinguished medical career
   1-15  in the United States Air Force Medical Corps, and in 1954 he joined
   1-16  the staff of Deaton Hospital and established his home in Galena
   1-17  Park; he quickly became a well-known and esteemed member of the
   1-18  community through his involvement with the Rotary Club, the Chamber
   1-19  of Commerce, the Galena Park Independent School District Board of
   1-20  Trustees, and the First Methodist Church; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, In addition to holding leadership positions in
   1-22  numerous professional organizations, Dr. Nichols has dedicated his
   1-23  time and energy to institutions of higher learning as a member of
   1-24  the boards of San Jacinto Community College and the Association of
    2-1  Community College Trustees, and his devotion to educational issues
    2-2  recently led his colleagues in the Rotary Club to establish a
    2-3  college scholarship in his name; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Despite his busy schedule, this energetic individual
    2-5  still makes time for golf, swimming, and other outdoor activities,
    2-6  and he also holds the rank of colonel in the Texas Confederate Air
    2-7  Force; he has maintained his active lifestyle even after nearly
    2-8  losing a leg in a serious accident, and thus he serves as an
    2-9  inspiring role model to his patients; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, His marriage, initiated at a cost of only 45 cents,
   2-11  appears to be one of the great bargains in history; he is the proud
   2-12  father of three Longhorns and one Aggie, and his eight beautiful
   2-13  grandchildren, Ashley, Austin, Brooke, Travis, Matthew, and
   2-14  triplets Tyler Ann, Michael, and Patrick, are a continuing source
   2-15  of joy and delight; and
   2-16        WHEREAS, Through his professional service and his community
   2-17  involvement, Dr. John Nichols has set an outstanding example of
   2-18  civic leadership for others to follow, and his efforts have earned
   2-19  him the respect and admiration of his friends and neighbors and the
   2-20  gratitude of his fellow Texans; now, therefore, be it
   2-21        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-22  Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. John Nichols on being named Man
   2-23  of the Year by the Galena Park Chamber of Commerce and extend to
   2-24  him warmest best wishes for many more years of continued success;
   2-25  and, be it further
   2-26        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-27  prepared for Dr. Nichols as an expression of high regard by the
    3-1  Texas House of Representatives.
