                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Many proud residents of the city of Gatesville will
    1-2  travel to Austin on February 14, 1995, to celebrate Gatesville Day
    1-3  at the State Capitol; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Conveniently situated in Central Texas and now
    1-5  linked to most major Texas cities by the state highway system,
    1-6  Gatesville originally was an isolated settlement on the wild Texas
    1-7  frontier; under constant threat of attack by the fierce Comanche
    1-8  warriors of this region, the town attracted only the hardiest and
    1-9  most courageous pioneers, but their steadfast determination enabled
   1-10  the town to grow and prosper, and it soon became the county seat of
   1-11  Coryell County; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, The city is located along the beautiful Leon River
   1-13  and is home to three city parks that offer a wide array of outdoor
   1-14  recreational activities; residents have ample opportunity to
   1-15  physically challenge themselves and each other at the city's public
   1-16  tennis courts, basketball courts, gymnasium, and swimming pool, and
   1-17  everyone supports the dedicated young athletes who participate in
   1-18  the Gatesville Little League program; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, The city's historic downtown area features numerous
   1-20  shopping and sightseeing opportunities, and its most famous
   1-21  attraction is the Coryell County Courthouse, one of the finest
   1-22  remaining examples of Romanesque Renaissance Revival architecture
   1-23  in Texas; built in 1897, the distinctive building is constructed of
   1-24  hand-cut limestone, and the interior of the clock tower's copper
    2-1  dome showcases a stunning stained-glass mosaic; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Behind the courthouse stands the old log jail, where
    2-3  visitors can venture back to the earliest days of frontier justice;
    2-4  the tiny 140-year-old structure, only the size of four phone
    2-5  booths, housed one guard, while the prisoner was kept in an
    2-6  underground cell and fed through a trap door in the floor; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, Gatesville residents celebrate their colorful
    2-8  heritage and spirit throughout the year with festive events such as
    2-9  the Wildcat Antique Show, the Shivaree Arts Fair and Rodeo, the
   2-10  Gatesville Homecoming and Harvest Festival, the JackPot Roping and
   2-11  PlayDay, and the annual Christmas Parade; in addition, the first
   2-12  Saturday of each month brings a country music festival to the City
   2-13  Auditorium, and this showcase has entertained music lovers from all
   2-14  over Central Texas; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, The people of Gatesville take justifiable pride in
   2-16  their community, for this charming town and its energetic citizens
   2-17  have added immeasurably to the rich history and culture of the Lone
   2-18  Star State, and their contributions are indeed worthy of special
   2-19  legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
   2-20        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-21  Legislature hereby recognize February 14, 1995, as Gatesville Day
   2-22  at the Capitol and join the citizens of Gatesville in paying
   2-23  tribute to one of Texas' finest cities; and, be it further
   2-24        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-25  prepared for the people of Gatesville as a commemoration of this
   2-26  grand occasion and as an expression of high regard by the Texas
   2-27  House of Representatives.
