R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Mable M. Chandler is a remarkable individual whose
1-2 myriad contributions as an educator, community leader, and mentor
1-3 to many of her former students have profoundly influenced the
1-4 course of public education in the Dallas Independent School
1-5 District; and
1-6 WHEREAS, A native Texan, she was born on December 2, 1915, in
1-7 Cass County and is herself a product of the Dallas public school
1-8 system, having attended Pacific Avenue and Julia C. Frazier
1-9 elementary schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High
1-10 School; and
1-11 WHEREAS, After high school, Mrs. Chandler moved to Austin,
1-12 where she earned a bachelor's degree from Huston-Tillotson College;
1-13 she later continued her education as a student at the University of
1-14 Iowa, which awarded her a master's degree after an intensive
1-15 nine-month course of study; and
1-16 WHEREAS, For 31 years, Mrs. Chandler served as a dedicated
1-17 educator at Lincoln High School, where she taught not only from the
1-18 textbook but by example; a gifted teacher, she kept her students
1-19 abreast of the many historical and contemporary contributions of
1-20 African Americans to the world while providing them with the
1-21 skills, self-confidence, and encouragement they needed to become
1-22 happy and productive members of society; and
1-23 WHEREAS, Her commitment toward her students has always
1-24 extended beyond the boundaries of the classroom; a noted
2-1 philanthropist, she has given generously of herself to each child
2-2 she has come in contact with over the years who exhibited a need
2-3 and a strong desire to continue his or her studies, enabling more
2-4 than 60 young people to pursue their dreams of a higher education;
2-5 and
2-6 WHEREAS, Outside of her work with the school district, this
2-7 admirable woman's love of children also was ever-present throughout
2-8 47 years of leading Sunday school activities at Greater New Zion
2-9 Baptist Church of Dallas; and
2-10 WHEREAS, Mrs. Chandler has earned a number of well-deserved
2-11 accolades throughout her full and generous life, including Woman of
2-12 the Year awards from Zeta Phi Beta and United for Action, the A.
2-13 Maceo Smith Award presented by The African American Museum, the
2-14 Willow Award of the Black Chamber of Commerce, St. Mark's Home
2-15 Mission Ministries Humanitarian Award, the Dallas Black History
2-16 Chronicle's 1995 Legends in Education Marion Butts Award, and an
2-17 award from the National Alliance of Black School Educators, to name
2-18 but a few; and
2-19 WHEREAS, In seeking a meaningful manner by which to pay
2-20 tribute to Mrs. Chandler for the difference she has made in their
2-21 lives, the members of the 1954 graduating class of Lincoln High
2-22 School established the Mable M. Chandler Scholarship Foundation in
2-23 her honor in June 1994; and
2-24 WHEREAS, The following individuals lend their valuable
2-25 insight and expertise to the benefit of the foundation as members
2-26 of its board of directors: Thomas J. Hendricks, John H. Hopps,
2-27 Velma C. Nance, Billye S. Aaron, Mary V. Gauthier, Tisha A. Horn,
3-1 James L. Sweatt III, Ray H. Shelton, and Alonzo Chappell; and
3-2 WHEREAS, Others who hope to expand the educational horizons
3-3 of many deserving young Texans include the members of the
3-4 foundation's hardworking scholarship committee: Gary Abernathy,
3-5 Mack H. Criddell, Joe Atkins, Clementene Gulley, Catherine B. Lee,
3-6 Gwendolyn Turner, Evelyn B. Mayfield, the Reverend J. Bob Thomas,
3-7 Martha Blakemore, and George Bowdre; and
3-8 WHEREAS, Throughout a lifetime of accomplishment, Mable M.
3-9 Chandler has exemplified the highest standards of the teaching
3-10 profession and earned a special place in the hearts of the many
3-11 people whose lives she has touched through her extraordinary
3-12 efforts in behalf of others; now, therefore, be it
3-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
3-14 Legislature hereby commend Mable M. Chandler for the many
3-15 significant contributions she has made to public education in Texas
3-16 and extend to her warmest best wishes for continued good fortune in
3-17 the years to come; and, be it further
3-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-19 prepared for Mrs. Chandler as an expression of high regard by the
3-20 Texas House of Representatives.
