R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will mark a
1-2 historic milestone this year as faculty, students, and alumni
1-3 celebrate the 150th anniversary of the school's founding; and
1-4 WHEREAS, This prestigious institution received a charter from
1-5 the Ninth Congress of the Republic of Texas and was founded on
1-6 February 1, 1845, as a part of Baylor University by James Huckins,
1-7 William M. Tryon, and Judge R. E. B. Baylor, for whom the school
1-8 was named; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Then located in Independence, the school was
1-10 coeducational until 1851, when it was organized into a Male
1-11 Department and a Female Department; under the new framework,
1-12 classes were taught in separate buildings by separate faculties;
1-13 and
1-14 WHEREAS, The Baptist State Convention approved a formal
1-15 separation of the schools in 1866, and the female department became
1-16 known as Baylor Female College; the school moved to its present
1-17 location in Belton in 1886, and Baylor University eventually moved
1-18 its campus to Waco; and
1-19 WHEREAS, The university's name was changed in 1934 to honor
1-20 Mrs. Mary Hardin, one of its most generous benefactors; and
1-21 WHEREAS, Once recognized as the oldest college for women west
1-22 of the Mississippi River, this commendable institution,
1-23 coeducational since 1971 and after 10 consecutive years of record
1-24 enrollment, currently boasts a student body of over 2,000; and
2-1 WHEREAS, Throughout its proud 150-year history, the
2-2 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has effectively addressed the
2-3 educational needs of the Central Texas region and, in doing so, has
2-4 greatly enhanced the educational, social, spiritual, and cultural
2-5 fabric of our state; now, therefore, be it
2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
2-7 Legislature hereby congratulate the University of Mary
2-8 Hardin-Baylor on the occasion of its sesquicentennial and commend
2-9 its president, Dr. Jerry G. Bawcom, its administrators, faculty,
2-10 and staff for their many years of outstanding service to the people
2-11 of Texas; and, be it further
2-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-13 prepared for the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor as an expression
2-14 of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
