R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Onie B. Conley is a beloved citizen of Austin who
1-2 has earned the respect and admiration of all who know her for her
1-3 many years of dedicated service to the betterment of her community;
1-4 and
1-5 WHEREAS, For more than 43 years, Ms. Conley shared her love
1-6 of learning with generations of Texas schoolchildren as an
1-7 outstanding teacher and, throughout her entire tenure, her devotion
1-8 to her students was so profound that Ms. Conley missed only one day
1-9 of school, that being to attend a funeral; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Despite her myriad responsibilities, Ms. Conley has
1-11 always found time in her busy life to contribute to many worthy
1-12 endeavors; a committed activist for the rights of senior citizens,
1-13 she has served as a dynamic force on such diverse issues as
1-14 transportation, health, education, and housing needs for the
1-15 elderly and was recently selected for a second time to serve as a
1-16 delegate to the White House Conference on Aging; and
1-17 WHEREAS, She has long given generously of her talent and
1-18 energy to teach classes and raise needed funds for the
1-19 Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center, which serves as an
1-20 important resource for the elderly population of Austin and was
1-21 accordingly named in her honor; and
1-22 WHEREAS, Throughout her many years of civic involvement,
1-23 Ms. Conley has been an active member of numerous boards and
1-24 commissions, including the Carver Museum Advisory Board, and she
2-1 was recently recognized for her efforts to preserve the rich
2-2 heritage of African Americans in Texas with her receipt of the
2-3 prestigious Legends Award; and
2-4 WHEREAS, A tireless force in the area of community service,
2-5 Onie Conley has consistently placed the needs of others above all
2-6 else, bringing her special strength and compassion to each task she
2-7 has faced; a true friend to the Austin community, she is indeed
2-8 deserving of special legislative recognition for her remarkable
2-9 contributions in this regard; now, therefore, be it
2-10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
2-11 Legislature hereby commend Onie B. Conley for her many years of
2-12 exceptional service as an educator, civic leader, and humanitarian;
2-13 and, be it further
2-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-15 prepared for Ms. Conley as an expression of highest regard by the
2-16 Texas House of Representatives.
