H.R. No. 242 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown has provided 1-2 thousands of Texans with access to a quality higher education since 1-3 its establishment by the Texas Legislature in 1974; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Serving the most ethnically diverse population of 1-5 any university in the state, the University of Houston is 1-6 continually improving its accessibility through such initiatives as 1-7 the Weekend College, which expands opportunities for community 1-8 college transfer students and individuals who are employed 1-9 full-time, and the Jefferson Davis Educational Collaborative, which 1-10 encourages inner-city youth to remain on the path to college; and 1-11 WHEREAS, This exemplary seat of higher learning is working 1-12 closely with area school districts to develop a teacher education 1-13 and certification program; among the program's worthy goals is the 1-14 creation of a pool of ethnically diverse educators whose skills 1-15 match the special needs of urban classrooms; and 1-16 WHEREAS, One of only eight Hispanic-serving institutions 1-17 nationwide to be accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate 1-18 Schools of Business, the University of Houston-Downtown works in 1-19 close partnership with the city's business community to ensure a 1-20 smooth transition for its graduates from school to the workplace; 1-21 and 1-22 WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown represents the 1-23 finest qualities of an institution of higher learning, and by 1-24 providing the broadest level of educational opportunity to all 2-1 Texans, it fulfills a purpose truly worthy of special legislative 2-2 recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-4 Legislature hereby commend the University of Houston-Downtown for 2-5 its significant contributions to the vital cause of higher 2-6 education during the past two decades; and, be it further 2-7 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-8 prepared for the University of Houston-Downtown as an expression of 2-9 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
