                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The wedding anniversary of two outstanding Texans
    1-2  who have shared 50 happy and rewarding years of marriage is indeed
    1-3  a memorable occasion worthy of special praise and recognition; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Robert T. Wells, Jr., and Nita Lynn Proffitt Wells
    1-5  recently had the privilege of commemorating such an event in their
    1-6  lives when they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on
    1-7  February 11, 1995; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Wells were married in Fort Worth during
    1-9  the final months of World War II, and after Mr. Wells completed his
   1-10  military service with the First Army in Germany, the couple settled
   1-11  in Boggy Valley, a rural community in Young County where they
   1-12  continue to make their home; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Both Mr. and Mrs. Wells are descendants of some of
   1-14  the earliest settlers of Young County, and like their forebears,
   1-15  they have become distinguished members of this fine North Texas
   1-16  community; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Mr. Wells is the son of Bob and Faye Wells, and he
   1-18  attended local schools in Proffitt before graduating from Newcastle
   1-19  High School and enrolling at North Texas State University;
   1-20  Mrs. Wells, the youngest child born to Reuel and Cora Proffitt in
   1-21  nearby Clay County, also graduated from Newcastle High School
   1-22  before continuing her education at Midwestern University and Ranger
   1-23  Junior College; and
   1-24        WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. Wells has served his friends and
    2-1  neighbors in Young County as manager of the Brazos Telephone Co-op,
    2-2  vice president and director of Farmers National Bank in Newcastle,
    2-3  and director of the Young County Soil and Water Conservation
    2-4  District; he also has dedicated his time and leadership to the
    2-5  Newcastle School Board as both a member and president; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Mrs. Wells enjoyed a long and fulfilling career at
    2-7  Farmers National Bank in Newcastle, where she worked for nearly 30
    2-8  years as a cashier and, ultimately, director; she later began a
    2-9  second career with Lake Country Real Estate in Graham; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, Devout members of Proffitt Baptist Church, Mr. and
   2-11  Mrs. Wells have taught Sunday school there for many years, and
   2-12  Mr. Wells further serves the members of that congregation as a
   2-13  deacon; these public-minded individuals also are active in civic
   2-14  and community affairs, and they have long shared a deep and abiding
   2-15  interest in preserving the area's history for future generations;
   2-16  and
   2-17        WHEREAS, This passion has led them to contribute their time
   2-18  and energy to several historical associations, including the
   2-19  Proffitt Cemetery Association; as officers and directors of that
   2-20  distinguished organization, Mr. and Mrs. Wells have been
   2-21  instrumental in efforts to preserve and beautify that Texas
   2-22  landmark, and Mrs. Wells spearheaded a project to map and record
   2-23  each burial plot; and
   2-24        WHEREAS, A former secretary-treasurer and director of the
   2-25  Fort Belknap Society, Mrs. Wells also completed the necessary
   2-26  research and state applications to secure a Texas Historical Marker
   2-27  along Highway 380 in honor of Joseph Alfred Woolfolk, an early
    3-1  settler in Young County; yet among her many noteworthy projects,
    3-2  her work to help secure a historical marker for the Proffitt
    3-3  Cemetery undoubtedly holds the most personal rewards, for one of
    3-4  her ancestors, Patrick Euell Proffitt, was among the first three
    3-5  people to be interred there after he and two friends fell victim to
    3-6  an Indian raid in 1867; and
    3-7        WHEREAS, Through their exceptional efforts to preserve the
    3-8  rich and colorful history of the Lone Star State, the Wellses have
    3-9  earned the respect and admiration of all Texans, and thus it is
   3-10  only fitting that, in return, the members of this chamber take a
   3-11  moment to honor a historic milestone in the lives of this
   3-12  remarkable couple; now, therefore, be it
   3-13        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   3-14  Legislature hereby congratulate Robert T. Wells, Jr., and Nita
   3-15  Proffitt Wells on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary
   3-16  and extend to them warmest best wishes for many more years of
   3-17  continued happiness; and, be it further
   3-18        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   3-19  prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Wells as an expression of high regard by
   3-20  the Texas House of Representatives.
