                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, For nearly 12 years, Dr. Allen B. Cohen has
    1-2  dedicated himself to the healing profession as a research scientist
    1-3  and professor of medicine at The University of Texas Health Center
    1-4  (UTHC) at Tyler, and his groundbreaking work in the field of
    1-5  biomedical research has opened promising new avenues of discovery
    1-6  in the causes and treatments of disease; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, After earning his undergraduate and doctor of
    1-8  medicine degrees from George Washington University in Washington,
    1-9  D.C., Dr. Cohen pursued a doctorate degree in immunochemistry at
   1-10  the University of California at San Francisco, and he has gone on
   1-11  to become one of the leading biomedical pulmonary scientists in the
   1-12  nation; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Board certified in both internal medicine and
   1-14  pulmonary disease, this distinguished physician taught at the
   1-15  University of California School of Medicine and at Temple
   1-16  University before joining the staff of The University of Texas
   1-17  Health Center at Tyler, where he serves as executive associate
   1-18  director and as a professor of medicine and biochemistry; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, During his tenure, the institution has achieved many
   1-20  prestigious milestones, including the construction of the UTHC
   1-21  Biomedical Research Center, the recruitment of a world-class
   1-22  research faculty, and the enhancement of the health center's
   1-23  national reputation in the treatment and prevention of pulmonary
   1-24  disease; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Dr. Cohen has further contributed to the education
    2-2  of his colleagues through his editorial contributions to the
    2-3  Journal of Clinical Investigation, the American Review of
    2-4  Respiratory Diseases, and the American Journal of Physiology; he
    2-5  has worked with numerous research committees and professional
    2-6  organizations, including the Alpha-1-Antitrypsin Registry, the
    2-7  study section of the Parker Francis Fellowship Foundation, the
    2-8  American Physiological Society, the American Society of Biological
    2-9  Chemists, and many more; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, Internationally recognized as an exceptional
   2-11  scientist, Dr. Cohen has been honored with the Research Career
   2-12  Development Award from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute
   2-13  and the Cecile Mayer National Research Award from the American
   2-14  College of Chest Physicians; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, Under Dr. Cohen's astute guidance, The University of
   2-16  Texas Health Center's biomedical research department has
   2-17  distinguished itself as one of the foremost medical research
   2-18  centers in the world, and his tireless efforts to improve the
   2-19  health and well-being of all people is truly worthy of special
   2-20  praise and recognition; now, therefore, be it
   2-21        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-22  Legislature hereby honor Dr. Allen B. Cohen for his many
   2-23  outstanding contributions to The University of Texas Health Center
   2-24  at Tyler and extend to him warmest best wishes for many more years
   2-25  of continued success; and, be it further
   2-26        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-27  prepared for Dr. Cohen as an expression of high regard by the Texas
    3-1  House of Representatives.
