                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
    1-2  Dr. Barbara Venton Montgomery for the outstanding service she has
    1-3  provided to her community and to the Democratic Party; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, This accomplished historian is a popular professor
    1-5  at El Centro Community College in Dallas where she has attracted a
    1-6  loyal following among the student body for her mastery of United
    1-7  States, Latin American, and Biblical history, in addition to her
    1-8  expertise in other areas of historical research; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, An honors graduate of the University of Illinois,
   1-10  this gifted academic also holds a master's degree in history with
   1-11  highest honors from California State University, Northridge, and a
   1-12  doctorate in history from Loyola University; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Dr. Montgomery has used her talent as a writer to
   1-14  reach a wider audience through the medium of television and created
   1-15  the first televised survey of United States history offered for
   1-16  college credit, The American Story; over the years, she has
   1-17  produced and written a number of other successful productions and
   1-18  most recently has devoted her time to a script on the historical
   1-19  King Arthur; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, A recognized expert in her field, she has garnered
   1-21  the respect of her peers in professional circles as the author of
   1-22  several noted academic works and for her design of challenging new
   1-23  undergraduate coursework in her department; and
   1-24        WHEREAS, A consultant to the Library of Congress on Latin
    2-1  America, Dr.  Montgomery also has provided valuable leadership and
    2-2  input as a member of the Archaeological Institute of America, the
    2-3  Biblical Archaeology Society, and the Dallas Council on World
    2-4  Affairs; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Outside her chosen field, this remarkable woman has
    2-6  committed much time and energy as a political activist in the
    2-7  Democratic Party; a former candidate for the United States House of
    2-8  Representatives, she provided valuable leadership for many years as
    2-9  the chair of the Rockwall County Democratic Party and also served
   2-10  with distinction on the State Democratic Executive Committee; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, Dedicated to community affairs as well, she enjoyed
   2-12  a distinguished tenure as a municipal judge for the city of Heath
   2-13  and has served in several local organizations charged with
   2-14  examining planning and zoning issues; in addition, she is a charter
   2-15  member of the Rockwall County NAACP and former president of the
   2-16  Rockwall County Business and Professional Women; and
   2-17        WHEREAS, This outstanding educator has received many
   2-18  well-deserved accolades over the course of her career, including a
   2-19  National Teaching Excellence Award and a historical writing award
   2-20  from the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge; she has been honored
   2-21  on repeated occasions by her community college and continues to add
   2-22  to her extensive body of knowledge by traveling abroad as a
   2-23  Fulbright Fellow; and
   2-24        WHEREAS, Barbara Venton Montgomery is an exceptional teacher
   2-25  and civic leader who has made many lasting contributions to her
   2-26  community and to the field of education in Texas; a woman of
   2-27  extraordinary accomplishments, she is indeed deserving of special
    3-1  legislative praise for her continuing contributions in this regard;
    3-2  now, therefore, be it
    3-3        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
    3-4  Legislature hereby commend Dr. Barbara Venton Montgomery for her
    3-5  exemplary service to her community, her profession, and the
    3-6  Democratic Party; and, be it further
    3-7        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-8  prepared for Dr. Montgomery as an expression of highest regard by
    3-9  the Texas House of Representatives.
