No. 342 74R6292 CCK-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Texas has enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial 1-2 relationship with its military facilities, receiving a multibillion 1-3 annual inflow of defense spending while offering excellent ports, 1-4 ideal training weather, strong local cooperation, and a low cost of 1-5 living for military personnel and their families; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The state currently is home to nine air force bases, 1-7 three air force and air guard stations, three army bases, two army 1-8 depots, one homeport naval station, and two naval air stations, all 1-9 prized by their respective surrounding communities; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The diverse missions of these facilities, comprising 1-11 strategic forces, pilot training, and logistical support, make 1-12 Texas military installations and military communities vital to this 1-13 country's national security; and 1-14 WHEREAS, During 1995, a final round of congressionally 1-15 authorized military base reductions will occur, marked early in the 1-16 year by a March 1 deadline for the transmittal of recommendations 1-17 from the secretary of defense to the Defense Base Closure and 1-18 Realignment Commission; and 1-19 WHEREAS, That transmittal is followed by additional 1-20 milestones leading to a July 1 deadline for commission 1-21 recommendations to the president and ultimately to consideration by 1-22 the United States Congress; and 1-23 WHEREAS, It is imperative that this state, having experienced 1-24 previous cutbacks in 1991 and 1993, participate actively in the 2-1 1995 process and emphasize to national decision makers the defense 2-2 contribution and retention value of Texas' remaining military 2-3 installations; now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th 2-5 Legislature hereby express its support for the state's military 2-6 bases and military communities and for their continued importance 2-7 to the guarantee of United States national security; and, be it 2-8 further 2-9 RESOLVED, That the house urge all state officials, both 2-10 elected and appointed, to participate energetically in the 1995 2-11 federal base realignment and closure process and to do everything 2-12 within their powers to help Texas military communities protect and 2-13 retain this state's defense installations.
