No. 344 74R7084 PFG-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 the staff and students of the Executive Secretarial School in 1-3 Dallas and its founder, Jan Rabb Friedheim, on the occasion of the 1-4 institution's 35th year of providing outstanding training to 1-5 individuals choosing to enter the secretarial field; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The school first opened its doors in 1960 and was 1-7 the brainchild of Ms. Friedheim, who recognized the need for a 1-8 specialized education program tailored to train secretaries in a 1-9 manner that would place their profession on a par with the other 1-10 predominately female occupations of that time, teaching and 1-11 nursing; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Flourishing under her capable direction, the 1-13 Executive Secretarial School has since become one of the largest 1-14 and most respected institutions of its kind and has graduated 1-15 thousands of highly skilled secretaries who have gone on to enjoy 1-16 rewarding jobs with companies throughout Texas; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Boasting a current enrollment of more than 650 1-18 students, the Executive Secretarial School has thrived by providing 1-19 its students with the excellent computer skills and managerial 1-20 training needed to succeed in today's high-tech, competitive 1-21 offices; equally important, the school helps its students to 1-22 acquire greater self-confidence and respect for the secretarial 1-23 profession, qualities that will prove vital to their success in the 1-24 working world and that serve as the foundation of Ms. Friedheim's 2-1 educational philosophy; and 2-2 WHEREAS, A talented entrepreneur, Ms. Friedheim was inspired 2-3 by the example of her father, who owned an automotive tire 2-4 dealership in Corpus Christi; she knew from an early age that she 2-5 wanted to enter the business field, and to this end she changed her 2-6 major to business administration while a student enrolled in the 2-7 honors program at The University of Texas at Austin; and 2-8 WHEREAS, She remained focused on her career goals after 2-9 graduation and gained valuable experience with her own employment 2-10 agency before accepting a position with a private business college 2-11 in Dallas that would eventually lead to the founding of the 2-12 Executive Secretarial School; and 2-13 WHEREAS, Overcoming the pervasive obstacles facing female 2-14 executives at the time she first started the school, Ms. Friedheim 2-15 has contributed to the erosion of barriers throughout her 2-16 distinguished career with a substantial record of accomplishment 2-17 that has helped to clear the way for other women entering the 2-18 professional world; and 2-19 WHEREAS, A dedicated activist who has consistently promoted 2-20 the positive image and valuable contributions of secretaries in the 2-21 workplace, this remarkable woman is the cochair of the National 2-22 Task Force on the Image of the Secretary, a group she helped 2-23 organize, and her efforts have greatly contributed toward winning 2-24 secretaries the high measure of respect they so richly deserve; and 2-25 WHEREAS, Ms. Friedheim also has generously shared her time 2-26 with numerous professional organizations and accrediting 2-27 commissions to assure the maintenance of high standards for 3-1 postsecondary technical schools throughout the country; and 3-2 WHEREAS, With vision and determination, this extraordinary 3-3 businesswoman and educator has had a profound impact on the lives 3-4 of countless individuals, while helping the secretarial profession 3-5 remain a viable career option for those whose strengths lie in the 3-6 administrative arena; the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the 3-7 founding of the Executive Secretarial School is an opportune time 3-8 to honor her for her noteworthy contributions to this important 3-9 discipline; now, therefore, be it 3-10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 3-11 Legislature hereby commend Jan Rabb Friedheim and the students and 3-12 staff of the Executive Secretarial School for their exemplary 3-13 achievements on the occasion of this significant milestone in the 3-14 history of their school; and, be it further 3-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-16 prepared for Ms. Friedheim and for prominent display at the 3-17 Executive Secretarial School as an expression of regard by the 3-18 Texas House of Representatives.
