R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Reverend George Woodson Daniels, who has served
1-2 as pastor of the Sunlight Baptist Church in Beaumont for nearly
1-3 half a century, recently was elected president of the Missionary
1-4 Baptist Convention of Texas, an organization representing
1-5 approximately 2,800 churches; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Over the years, Reverend Daniels has distinguished
1-7 himself as one of the most prominent and accomplished ministers in
1-8 the Lone Star State; and
1-9 WHEREAS, This exceptional clergyman discovered his calling at
1-10 an early age; born in Horatio, Arkansas, he was raised in Beaumont,
1-11 where he was graduated from Charlton-Pollard High School and where
1-12 he developed the leadership qualities and devotion to serving God
1-13 that have made him a truly remarkable force within the Baptist
1-14 community; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Reverend Daniels continued his education at Conroe
1-16 College, Bishop College, Texas Southern University, and Inter
1-17 Baptist Theological Center, earning degrees in theology and law;
1-18 and
1-19 WHEREAS, He received great lessons in the power of faith as a
1-20 chaplain in the United States Navy during World War II, serving
1-21 with honor and distinction from 1944 to 1946; upon his return to
1-22 civilian life, Reverend Daniels settled in his hometown of
1-23 Beaumont, where he was named pastor of the Sunlight Baptist Church;
1-24 and
2-1 WHEREAS, Today, 49 years after his arrival at this ministry,
2-2 he continues to serve his congregation with great devotion,
2-3 compassion, and wisdom; during his remarkable tenure, he has
2-4 provided counsel and guidance to as many as five generations of the
2-5 same family; and
2-6 WHEREAS, In addition to serving his congregation, Reverend
2-7 Daniels has maintained many professional affiliations within the
2-8 Baptist community; the president of the Baptist Ministers' Union of
2-9 Beaumont and Vicinity, he also serves as moderator of the General
2-10 Bowen Missionary Baptist District Association of Texas; and
2-11 WHEREAS, In 1989 this exemplary pastor was named Texas
2-12 Minister of the Year by the Texas Ministers Conference at Prairie
2-13 View A&M University; he also serves as chairman of the National
2-14 Baptist Convention publishing board; and
2-15 WHEREAS, Concerning himself with all aspects of the human
2-16 experience, Reverend Daniels made many important contributions to
2-17 the civil rights movements of the 1960s, working by the side of
2-18 such notable leaders as the Reverend W. M. McCarty and the late
2-19 Reverend Edward Brown; today, he continues to work toward the goals
2-20 of egalitarianism and democracy and holds a lifetime membership in
2-21 the N.A.A.C.P.; and
2-22 WHEREAS, This fine Texan has also committed himself to
2-23 improving the quality of education in this state, having helped to
2-24 establish a Christian academy that today offers classes for school
2-25 children up to the second grade; and
2-26 WHEREAS, Reverend Daniels is above all else a loving and
2-27 devoted family man who enjoyed a happy and successful marriage with
3-1 his wife of 52 years, the late Ruth Helen Cole, and who is
3-2 immensely proud of his two sons, Perry and Wayne, and his five
3-3 beloved grandchildren; and
3-4 WHEREAS, This extraordinary pastor has truly made his
3-5 community and state better places in which to work, worship, and
3-6 raise a family, and it is indeed fitting that he be honored at this
3-7 time; now, therefore, be it
3-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
3-9 Legislature hereby commend the Reverend George Woodson Daniels for
3-10 his many exceptional contributions to his congregation, community,
3-11 state, and nation; and, be it further
3-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-13 prepared for Reverend Daniels as an expression of high regard by
3-14 the Texas House of Representatives.
