                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Galveston College Whitecaps baseball team has
    1-2  ascended to the pinnacle of athletic success by winning the 1994
    1-3  National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I
    1-4  title; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, In only its third year of intercollegiate athletic
    1-6  competition, the Galveston College program has set standards of
    1-7  excellence to which all can aspire; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Ending the 1994 regular season on a high note by
    1-9  claiming its first Texas Junior College Athletic Conference title,
   1-10  Galveston College then advanced to the Texas-New Mexico State
   1-11  Tournament; although coming up short in their second tournament
   1-12  game, the Whitecaps swept through their remaining contests to win
   1-13  the tournament championship and earn a coveted spot in the NJCAA
   1-14  World Series; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, The Whitecaps took the field at the NJCAA World
   1-16  Series in Grand Junction, Colorado, determined to improve on their
   1-17  third-place finish of the previous year; the team responded
   1-18  remarkably to the pressures of series competition, winning six of
   1-19  seven games to take the coveted crown and finish the season with 54
   1-20  wins against only 14 defeats; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Although each team member made a significant
   1-22  contribution to the Whitecaps' success, several players also earned
   1-23  individual honors; Jose Rosado, Roman Escamilla, Stephen Randolph,
   1-24  William Roland, Dominic Hernandez, Justin Bowles, and Mark Cridland
    2-1  were named to the NJCAA World Series all-tournament team, Jose
    2-2  Rosado also was tabbed the series most valuable player and most
    2-3  outstanding pitcher, and Justin Bowles was chosen NJCAA first team
    2-4  All-American and Baseball America junior college player of the
    2-5  year; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Other Whitecaps players receiving recognition for
    2-7  their performance during conference and postseason regional
    2-8  tournament competition include Mark Manbeck, Chris Olson, Stephen
    2-9  Watson, Scott Morrison, Collin Wissen, and Karl Chatman; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, Inspiration and determined leadership were the
   2-11  hallmark of head coach Dick Smith, who schooled his charges in
   2-12  baseball fundamentals and ignited their desire to excel both
   2-13  individually and as a team; for his superior efforts Coach Smith
   2-14  was honored as NJCAA and ABCA coach of the year; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, This exemplary group of young men and their coaches
   2-16  and staff have been a source of tremendous pride for the students
   2-17  and faculty at Galveston College and their many supporters in the
   2-18  community, and their exceptional accomplishments have rightfully
   2-19  earned them special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
   2-20        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-21  Legislature hereby congratulate the Galveston College Whitecaps on
   2-22  their 1994 NJCAA Division I baseball championship and extend to
   2-23  them best wishes for continued success in the future; and, be it
   2-24  further
   2-25        RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
   2-26  for members of the team and coaching staff and that a copy be
   2-27  prepared for prominent display at Galveston College as an
    3-1  expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
