                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, A distinguished Texan, Sue Mood McMichael, is with
    1-2  us in the gallery today in conjunction with her first trip to the
    1-3  State Capitol since its historic restoration, and it gives the
    1-4  members of this chamber great pleasure to recognize this remarkable
    1-5  woman at this time; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Born October 20, 1901, with notable Texas lineage,
    1-7  she is the granddaughter of Frances Asbury Mood, the founder and
    1-8  first president of Southwestern University in Georgetown;
    1-9  Mrs. McMichael attended that eminent institution herself and,
   1-10  during her tenure as an undergraduate, was a two-term president of
   1-11  Delta Delta Delta sorority and voted Queen of the May; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Mrs. McMichael was graduated from the university
   1-13  with a degree in English in 1923 and later continued her education
   1-14  as a graduate student at The University of Texas at Austin (UT),
   1-15  which awarded her a master's degree in 1931; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, She taught high school English for a number of years
   1-17  in Corpus Christi until her marriage to William A. McMichael in
   1-18  Dallas in 1936, with whom she would share an exceptionally happy
   1-19  and rewarding marriage that would span more than five decades until
   1-20  his passing in 1992; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Throughout her full and generous life,
   1-22  Mrs. McMichael has always been true to her convictions and her
   1-23  commitment to making a difference in the lives of others has had a
   1-24  profound impact on the lives of countless fellow Texans; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, In the 1950s, this dedicated community leader served
    2-2  on the Child and Family Services Board, in which capacity she
    2-3  worked diligently to earn social workers the recognition they so
    2-4  richly deserved; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, For more than three decades now, she has been an
    2-6  active member of PEO, a philanthropic and educational organization
    2-7  for women, and continues to attend its meetings today at the age of
    2-8  93; she also has long given generously of her time as an active
    2-9  member of the University United Methodist Church and the United
   2-10  Methodist Women's Group; and
   2-11         WHEREAS, A champion of education through the years,
   2-12  Mrs. McMichael, together with her husband, established two
   2-13  endowment funds at Southwestern University, which designated
   2-14  Mrs. McMichael an honorary citizen of Georgetown at her 70th
   2-15  college reunion in 1993;  diehard Longhorn fans as well, the couple
   2-16  held season tickets for the institution's basketball, football, and
   2-17  baseball seasons and Hogg Auditorium Lecture Series for 40 years,
   2-18  and their support of that fine school is evident on a brick that
   2-19  bears their name at the UT Ex-Students Association; and
   2-20        WHEREAS, Since 1980, Mrs. McMichael has been a resident of
   2-21  Westminster Manor, where she is a beloved member of the community;
   2-22  an adored aunt and cousin to many, she is cherished by all who know
   2-23  her for her wisdom, kindness, and compassion, and it is a privilege
   2-24  to commend her on the occasion of her visit to the State Capitol;
   2-25  now, therefore, be it
   2-26        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-27  Legislature hereby honor Sue Mood McMichael for the many
    3-1  significant contributions she has made to the betterment of her
    3-2  community and state and extend warmest best wishes to her for
    3-3  continued good fortune and happiness; and, be it further
    3-4        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-5  prepared for Mrs. McMichael as an expression of high regard by the
    3-6  Texas House of Representatives.
