                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, On March 3, 1995, the Waco regional office of the
    1-2  Veterans Administration achieved an important milestone in its
    1-3  51-year history, reaching the $20 billion mark in home loans made
    1-4  to deserving veterans who have served the United States of America
    1-5  in its time of need; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, On this memorable date, Danny Bailey purchased a
    1-7  home in Lacy-Lakeview with the help of Sue Richardson of Coldwell
    1-8  Banker Hallmark Realty, Mary Jo Teakell of First Bankers Mortgage
    1-9  Corporation, and the staff of the Veterans Administration regional
   1-10  office in Waco, who administer loans throughout 164 Texas counties
   1-11  from Texarkana to El Paso; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, This loan program was created during World War II,
   1-13  when the Serviceman's Readjustment Act of 1944, better known as the
   1-14  GI bill, was signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt on
   1-15  June 22, 1944; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The first home loan made by the Waco regional office
   1-17  was granted in December 1944 to a veteran residing in Dallas
   1-18  County; since that time, the office has helped veterans finance
   1-19  more than 560,000 homes and more than 12,000 mobile homes; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, This program has enabled Texas veterans to purchase
   1-21  new homes on their return from military service and has been one of
   1-22  the most successful loan programs in our nation's history; the
   1-23  staff of the Waco regional office of the Veterans Administration
   1-24  can take great pride in their achievements as they commemorate this
    2-1  remarkable milestone on March 17, 1995, when they will welcome
    2-2  Jesse Brown, the secretary of Veterans Affairs, to the city of
    2-3  Waco; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, This extraordinary program has made an immeasurable
    2-5  difference in the lives of veterans across the Lone Star State, and
    2-6  it is indeed appropriate at this time that it be given special
    2-7  legislative recognition and support; now, therefore, be it
    2-8        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
    2-9  Legislature hereby commend the staff and officers of the Veterans
   2-10  Administration's regional office in Waco on the occasion of
   2-11  reaching the $20 billion mark in home loan guarantees; and, be it
   2-12  further
   2-13        RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
   2-14  for Danny Bailey, Sue Richardson, and Mary Jo Teakell; for Angie
   2-15  Wild of the Waco loan guarantee division; for Dr. Lois High,
   2-16  director of the Waco regional office; and for the entire staff of
   2-17  the Veterans Administration regional office as an expression of
   2-18  high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
