R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, On March 19, 1995, the people of Nueces County will
1-2 mark a momentous occasion when they celebrate the 30th anniversary
1-3 of the community's Head Start program with Fiesta Head Start Day,
1-4 an informative and fun-filled event for young and old alike; and
1-5 WHEREAS, The Head Start program was initiated by President
1-6 Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965 as a key component of a "Great Society"
1-7 that would extend a helping hand to all Americans regardless of
1-8 their race, creed, or social status; and
1-9 WHEREAS, By working closely with preschool-aged children and
1-10 their families, this invaluable program seeks to identify and help
1-11 disadvantaged children who are at risk of malnutrition and
1-12 associated learning problems; this early intervention helps to give
1-13 the children a "head start" on their education and prepares them
1-14 for the rigors of school, because a successful education is a
1-15 child's best tool for building a better future; and
1-16 WHEREAS, Residents of Nueces County will celebrate the
1-17 success stories of their program by hosting a reunion for former
1-18 Head Start students as part of the day's festivities; Fiesta Head
1-19 Start Day will offer families the opportunity to enjoy live music,
1-20 games, guest speakers, and a variety of activities; and
1-21 WHEREAS, More importantly, Fiesta Head Start Day will
1-22 increase community awareness of this vital program and will serve
1-23 as the official kickoff for the program's 1995-1996 recruitment
2-1 drive; information about the Head Start program will be
2-2 disseminated to the public, and a voter registration drive will be
2-3 held to further encourage community involvement and participation
2-4 among all the residents of the county; and
2-5 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Nueces County Community Action
2-6 Agency, Fiesta Head Start Day will undoubtedly raise awareness of
2-7 the many critical issues facing families and children today; by
2-8 joining together to recognize the merits of the Head Start program,
2-9 the people of Nueces County are demonstrating their collective
2-10 commitment to the youth of their community; now, therefore, be it
2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
2-12 Legislature hereby recognize Fiesta Head Start Day in Corpus
2-13 Christi and extend to the event's organizers and participants best
2-14 wishes for a successful and memorable celebration; and, be it
2-15 further
2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-17 prepared for the Nueces County Community Action Agency as an
2-18 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
