                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, On March 14 and 15, 1995, the Texas House of
    1-2  Representatives will join with the members of the Delta Sigma Theta
    1-3  Sorority, Incorporated, in paying tribute to one of the Lone Star
    1-4  State's most notable community service organizations; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority can trace its origins to
    1-6  1913, when 22 women at Howard University united with the common
    1-7  purposes of promoting scholastic achievement and contributing their
    1-8  time and resources to helping members of their local community; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Today, the spirit of these founding members lives
   1-10  on, and this remarkable association is now one of the world's
   1-11  leading sororities for African-American women; with more than 700
   1-12  chapters and 175,000 members internationally, Delta Sigma Theta
   1-13  Sorority plays a vital role in providing a united voice on a number
   1-14  of health and human services issues for people around the globe;
   1-15  and
   1-16        WHEREAS, In their effort to improve the lives of those around
   1-17  them, the sisters of this organization work to promote educational
   1-18  development, economic development, physical and mental health,
   1-19  political awareness and involvement, and international awareness
   1-20  and involvement, both in their local communities and on a global
   1-21  scale; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, To these ends, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has
   1-23  initiated a number of highly successful programs targeting
   1-24  illiteracy, drug abuse, unemployment, gang violence, teen
    2-1  pregnancy, infant mortality, kidney disease, and AIDS; members of
    2-2  this exemplary sorority, which include mayors, legislators,
    2-3  university presidents, and United States presidential appointees,
    2-4  take an active role in shaping education and health policy in our
    2-5  state and nation; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, In light of these outstanding achievements, it is
    2-7  indeed fitting that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority be given special
    2-8  recognition and support for its efforts to provide health services
    2-9  and educational programs to promote human welfare; now, therefore,
   2-10  be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-12  Legislature hereby designate March 14 and 15, 1995, as Delta Days
   2-13  at the State Capitol in honor of the members and officers of Delta
   2-14  Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; and, be it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-16  prepared for the members and officers of this distinguished
   2-17  organization as an expression of high esteem by the Texas House of
   2-18  Representatives.
