                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, This year the Pine Crest Presbyterian Church of
    1-2  Houston is commemorating the 70th anniversary of its founding, and
    1-3  the occasion is an opportune time to recognize the church for the
    1-4  pivotal role it has played in the positive development of the Fifth
    1-5  Ward community; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, The history of the church dates back to 1925 when it
    1-7  was formed to serve the spiritual needs of the neighborhood as
    1-8  Gregg St. Church; during its first quarter century of existence,
    1-9  the church made many important contributions to the community,
   1-10  becoming the first church to sponsor a food pantry, well-baby
   1-11  clinic, kindergarten, and boy scout troop to benefit area
   1-12  residents; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Renamed Pine Crest Presbyterian Church in 1950, it
   1-14  continued in its role as a cornerstone of the Fifth Ward community
   1-15  through its support of a number of ambitious undertakings,
   1-16  including a day-care program, Head Start program, housing
   1-17  rehabilitation and home ownership program, youth employment
   1-18  project, Alcoholics Anonymous group and halfway recovery house, an
   1-19  education center, and a thrift store; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Other vital achievements were soon to follow in the
   1-21  form of computer education classes, a refugee resettlement project,
   1-22  a prison ministry, continued involvement in the provision of low
   1-23  income housing through its sponsorship of the Fifth Ward Housing
   1-24  Corporation and Houston Habitat for Humanity, and its service as a
    2-1  founding member of the Metropolitan Organization; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, A very special element in the lives of the people it
    2-3  serves, Pine Crest Presbyterian Church has remained attuned to the
    2-4  changing needs of society since its founding and stands today as a
    2-5  tribute to the dedication and hard work of its members, who have
    2-6  always devoted their time, energy, and resources to ensure its
    2-7  continued existence as a house of God; now, therefore, be it
    2-8        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
    2-9  Legislature hereby honor Pine Crest Presbyterian Church on its 70
   2-10  years of service to the Fifth Ward community and commend its fine
   2-11  congregation on their exceptional civic service; and, be it further
   2-12        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-13  prepared for Pine Crest Presbyterian Church as an expression of
   2-14  high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
