                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to join
    1-2  the citizens of Edinburg in the joyous celebration of Edinburg Day
    1-3  at the Capitol on March 28, 1995; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Located at the western gateway to the Lower Rio
    1-5  Grande Valley, the town was originally known as Chapin; the
    1-6  community became the Hidalgo County seat in 1908, and one year
    1-7  after the county's first permanent courthouse was completed in
    1-8  1910, the town was renamed Edinburg in honor of Hidalgo County's
    1-9  first county seat; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, With the advent of the railroad, citizens flocked to
   1-11  make their home in this growing and desirable community, and
   1-12  proprietors came to establish a variety of businesses; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Officially incorporated in 1919, its first governing
   1-14  board included Mayor A. Y. Baker and city commissioners Marshall
   1-15  McIlhenny and J. W. Heacock; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Edinburg originally enjoyed a vibrant economy based
   1-17  on ranching, but successful irrigation efforts and a warm, sunny
   1-18  climate have transformed the area into one of the nation's leading
   1-19  producers of vegetables and citrus fruits; the town is also home to
   1-20  many thriving industries that contribute greatly to the state's
   1-21  economic prosperity; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, The community also is proud to host one of the
   1-23  Valley's most outstanding institutions of higher education, The
   1-24  University of Texas--Pan American; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, The city draws many visitors who come to enjoy its
    2-2  array of cultural resources; the Hidalgo County Historical Museum
    2-3  offers a variety of exhibitions that showcase the area's rich and
    2-4  vibrant Hispanic heritage, and the widely popular Sheriff's Posse
    2-5  Rodeo provides much entertainment as well; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Rich in culture and tradition, Edinburg is a
    2-7  prosperous, forward-looking community and a leading participant in
    2-8  the state's dynamic growth, and it gives the members of this
    2-9  chamber great pleasure to join with our fellow citizens in saluting
   2-10  this fine Texas community; now, therefore, be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-12  Legislature hereby designate March 28, 1995, as Edinburg Day at the
   2-13  Capitol and extend best wishes to all its citizens on this
   2-14  noteworthy occasion; and, be it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-16  prepared for the citizens of Edinburg as an expression of high
   2-17  regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
