                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The passing of Claude McCain, Jr., on March 12,
    1-2  1995, at the age of 63, has brought a great loss to the many
    1-3  friends and relatives of this distinguished gentleman; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, A native of Dallas, he graduated from the local
    1-5  public schools and attended Wiley College in Marshall before
    1-6  earning a bachelor's degree in biology from West Virginia State
    1-7  College in 1951; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, He began his distinguished career with Dallas's
    1-9  Parkland Hospital as a research assistant at the University of
   1-10  Texas Southwestern Medical School in the early 1950s and went on to
   1-11  work in the hospital's cardiopulmonary laboratory; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Mr. McCain later served as a regional hospital
   1-13  inspector for the United States Department of Health, Education and
   1-14  Welfare and went on to earn a master's degree in public
   1-15  administration from Cornell University in 1969; an ambitious and
   1-16  dedicated individual, he worked his way through graduate school as
   1-17  a weekend orderly at a nursing home; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, He then returned to Parkland Hospital to become its
   1-19  first African-American administrator, accepting a position as
   1-20  director of the personnel department; he later served as night
   1-21  administrator, and after distinguishing himself as a respected and
   1-22  efficient manager, he received a series of promotions to become a
   1-23  vice-president; and
   1-24        WHEREAS, Mr. McCain's tenure was marked by a profound
    2-1  devotion to both patients and hospital staff; in addition to
    2-2  running the hospital's minority development program and
    2-3  facilitating patient care in emergency situations, he always made
    2-4  time in his busy schedule to visit the hospital at night, where he
    2-5  provided late-shift employees with a crucial link to the
    2-6  administration; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, Mr. McCain was a man of boundless compassion,
    2-8  strength, and dignity who served as a positive role model to
    2-9  countless individuals in the Dallas community, and though his
   2-10  presence will be deeply missed, his spirit will surely live on in
   2-11  the hearts and minds of the many people whose lives he touched;
   2-12  now, therefore, be it
   2-13        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-14  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Claude McCain, Jr.,
   2-15  and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
   2-16  beloved wife, Ramona McCain; to his daughter, Demetria McCain; to
   2-17  his son, Michael McCain; to his sisters, Lera Garrett and Mae
   2-18  Frances Traylor; and to his many other friends and relatives; and,
   2-19  be it further
   2-20        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-21  prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
   2-22  House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
   2-23  Claude McCain, Jr.
