H.R. No. 441 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Many proud residents of Graham and Young County will 1-2 travel to Austin on March 20 and 21, 1995, to celebrate 1-3 Graham-Young County Community Day at the Capitol; and 1-4 WHEREAS, In recognition of this festive event, the Graham 1-5 delegation will host a reception at Austin's Omni Hotel on March 20 1-6 and a legislative breakfast on March 21 so that they may meet some 1-7 of their constituents from Young County, which is the largest of 1-8 the 13 counties in House District 68; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Originally founded in 1856, Young County was 1-10 reorganized into its present configuration in 1874, and at that 1-11 time the fledgling city of Graham was named as the county seat; the 1-12 city had been founded just two years earlier by Gustavus and Edwin 1-13 S. Graham, who capitalized on the area's plentiful salt deposits 1-14 with one of the town's earliest businesses, Graham Brothers Salt 1-15 Works; and 1-16 WHEREAS, The county's rich soil soon gave rise to a variety 1-17 of farming enterprises, and large crops of corn, cotton, grains, 1-18 peanuts, and fruits established the area as a major agricultural 1-19 producer; vast timber supplies and large deposits of coal, iron, 1-20 gas, and oil added to the county's array of natural resources, and 1-21 today its economy has grown to include the manufacture of livestock 1-22 feeds, garments, and leather goods, as well as agribusiness and the 1-23 oil industry; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Recreational and tourist opportunities abound in the 2-1 beautiful North Central Texas community of Graham, and outdoor 2-2 enthusiasts flock to Possum Kingdom Lake and Lake Graham to enjoy 2-3 boating, swimming, fishing, and other activities; history buffs 2-4 enjoy the area's many antique stores, museums, and the restored 2-5 Fort Belknap historical site; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Graham also is the home of the oldest newspaper in 2-7 the North Texas region, the Graham Leader, which published its 2-8 first edition in 1876 and continues today as a bi-weekly 2-9 periodical; in addition, the news and information needs of the 2-10 community are further met by radio stations KSWA-AM and KWKQ-FM; 2-11 and 2-12 WHEREAS, Blessed with abundant natural resources and an 2-13 energetic and forward-looking population, this unique community and 2-14 its exceptional citizens have played a significant role in Texas' 2-15 development, and their many contributions to the Lone Star State 2-16 are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition; now, 2-17 therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-19 Legislature hereby recognize March 20 and 21, 1995, as Graham-Young 2-20 County Community Day at the Capitol and join the citizens of that 2-21 area in paying tribute to one of Texas' finest communities; and, be 2-22 it further 2-23 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-24 prepared for the residents of Young County as a commemoration of 2-25 this grand occasion and as an expression of high regard by the 2-26 Texas House of Representatives.
