                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, This year marks the retirement of Buddy R. Venters
    1-2  from his post as president of Del Mar College, drawing to a close a
    1-3  distinguished affiliation with the college that has spanned nearly
    1-4  four decades; and
    1-5        WHEREAS,  A native of Holcomb, Missouri, this fine gentleman
    1-6  was graduated salutatorian of his high school class and proudly
    1-7  served his country in the Air Force for four years before moving to
    1-8  Texas and settling in Corpus Christi; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Mr. Venters is himself a graduate of Del Mar
   1-10  College, having obtained an associate's degree from this respected
   1-11  institution in 1956 on the way to completing his bachelor's and
   1-12  master's degrees at Texas A&I University in Kingsville; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Initially hired as an assistant business manager by
   1-14  the college in 1957, he quickly earned the admiration of his
   1-15  professional colleagues for his dedication and proficiency on the
   1-16  job and earned frequent advancement to positions of increasing
   1-17  responsibility, including that of business manager, controller, and
   1-18  vice president of finance and business affairs; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Named vice president of the college in 1980, he
   1-20  distinguished himself in that capacity for five years until 1985,
   1-21  when he was chosen to serve as executive vice president of business
   1-22  and finance for the institution; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Mr. Venters began his notable tenure as president of
   1-24  Del Mar College on August 1, 1987, armed with an admirable
    2-1  understanding of higher education in Texas and an unwavering
    2-2  dedication to high academic standards and excellence in every
    2-3  regard; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, In the ensuing years, Mr. Venters has presided over
    2-5  many exciting developments at the two-year college that have
    2-6  contributed significantly to the school's reputation as an
    2-7  outstanding educational institution; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, Mr. Venters has shared his considerable insight and
    2-9  expertise with his colleagues as a valued member of countless
   2-10  professional organizations, including the Public Community &
   2-11  Technical College Formula Advisory Committee of the Texas Higher
   2-12  Education Coordinating Board, the Southern Association of Colleges
   2-13  and Schools, the Texas Association of Community Colleges, the Texas
   2-14  Association of Public Junior Colleges, and the National Association
   2-15  of College and University Business Officers; and
   2-16        WHEREAS, Far from restricting himself to educational
   2-17  activities alone, Mr. Venters is a dedicated civic leader who
   2-18  faithfully serves his church and community, modeling and sharing
   2-19  his beliefs to the benefit of others, through his participation in
   2-20  such worthy organizations as the Del Mar Kiwanis Club, the National
   2-21  Conference of Christians and Jews, the Corpus Christi Chamber of
   2-22  Commerce, the Mayor's Interagency Coordinating Council, and the
   2-23  Corpus Christi Bay Area Minority Business Opportunity Program; and
   2-24        WHEREAS, A devoted family man as well, he enjoys a rewarding
   2-25  marriage with his wife, Cynda, and takes great pride in his
   2-26  close-knit family of two children and two grandchildren; and
   2-27        WHEREAS, Buddy R. Venters has set an inspiring example of
    3-1  leadership and professional excellence throughout his career, and
    3-2  it is fitting that he be honored at this time for his extraordinary
    3-3  achievements as president of Del Mar College; now, therefore, be it
    3-4        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
    3-5  Legislature hereby commend Buddy R. Venters on his many valuable
    3-6  contributions to the development of Del Mar College and extend to
    3-7  him sincere best wishes for a happy and fulfilling retirement; and,
    3-8  be it further
    3-9        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   3-10  prepared for Mr. Venters as an expression of high regard by the
   3-11  Texas House of Representatives.
