H.R. No. 469 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Westlake High School girls' basketball team has 1-2 attained the pinnacle of success by winning the 1995 University 1-3 Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 5A state championship; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Having earned the Class 4A title in 1993, the Lady 1-5 Chaparrals squad was determined to make a championship run in its 1-6 first year of competition in a new classification and showed this 1-7 determination by applying a tireless work ethic and selfless 1-8 devotion to the team concept; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Westlake faced undefeated and four-time state 1-10 champion Duncanville High School in the title matchup at the Frank 1-11 C. Erwin Special Events Center in Austin, and the Lady Chaparrals 1-12 displayed true championship mettle, overcoming their formidable foe 1-13 59-56 in overtime to claim the state crown and finish their season 1-14 with a record of 36 wins against only four defeats; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Although every Westlake player contributed to the 1-16 team's overall success, Krista Watson earned special distinction as 1-17 the championship game's most valuable player; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Inspirational leadership was the hallmark of head 1-19 coach Cathy Self, who schooled her charges in hardwood fundamentals 1-20 and ignited their desire to excel both individually and as a team; 1-21 and 1-22 WHEREAS, This exemplary group of young women and their 1-23 coaches and staff have been a tremendous source of pride for the 1-24 students and faculty at Westlake High School and their many 2-1 supporters in the community, and their exceptional accomplishments 2-2 have rightfully earned them special legislative recognition; now, 2-3 therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-5 Legislature hereby congratulate the Westlake High School girls' 2-6 basketball team on its 1995 UIL Class 5A championship and extend 2-7 best wishes for continued success in the future; and, be it further 2-8 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared 2-9 for the team members and coaching staff and for prominent display 2-10 at Westlake High School as an expression of high regard by the 2-11 Texas House of Representatives.
