H.R. No. 496 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On March 29, 1995, many proud residents of the city 1-2 of Crowley will travel to the State Capitol to celebrate Crowley 1-3 Day in Austin; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Situated in southeast Tarrant County, the city of 1-5 Crowley was first settled in 1848, three years after Texas became a 1-6 state; the community became well-established after 1882 when the 1-7 Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad built its main route through 1-8 the area, and was named in honor of S. H. Crowley, a railroad 1-9 official who worked in Galveston at the end of the line; and 1-10 WHEREAS, During the early 1900s, this beautiful area grew 1-11 into a small, close-knit town that served a vital role in the 1-12 growth of the Texas economy; the site of several cotton gins and 1-13 many successful agricultural businesses, Crowley also was home to 1-14 many residents who commuted to nearby Fort Worth and participated 1-15 in that city's rapid industrial development; and 1-16 WHEREAS, During World War II, Crowley gained recognition 1-17 around the country for its citizens' generosity and compassion, 1-18 setting the national record for per capita donations to the 1-19 American Red Cross war fund; this impressive mission was achieved 1-20 through the hard work of many townspeople in the area, who raised 1-21 more than $10,000 for the war effort from 1943 to 1945; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Incorporated as a home-rule city in 1952, Crowley 1-23 has seen explosive population growth, and today its citizens enjoy 1-24 both the benefits of living in a small town and a wide range of 2-1 services normally found only in much larger cities, including a 2-2 well-trained volunteer fire department and emergency medical 2-3 services department; home to approximately 7,200 Texans, the city 2-4 of Crowley is the site of one of the area's most important 2-5 hospitals, the Huguley Memorial Medical Center, and its independent 2-6 school district serves nearly 7,000 children throughout southern 2-7 Tarrant County; and 2-8 WHEREAS, This fine city is also the site of the new Dionne 2-9 Bagsby All Sports Complex, a facility for Tarrant County residents 2-10 that was built with the support of the city of Crowley, Tarrant 2-11 County, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and many devoted 2-12 citizen volunteers from the area; as part of the booming Metroplex 2-13 economy, the city of Crowley stands poised on the brink of a new 2-14 millennium with a bright economic future in sight; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Blessed with natural beauty, a rich heritage, and a 2-16 dynamic citizenry, Crowley is truly one of our state's most 2-17 remarkable cities, offering its residents an ideal environment in 2-18 which to work, play, and raise a family, and these many fine 2-19 attributes are indeed deserving of special legislative recognition 2-20 and praise; now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-22 Legislature hereby recognize March 29, 1995, as Crowley Day at the 2-23 Capitol and join with the citizens of Crowley in paying tribute to 2-24 one of the most vibrant small communities in the Lone Star State; 2-25 and, be it further 2-26 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-27 prepared for the city of Crowley as a commemoration of this grand 3-1 occasion and as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of 3-2 Representatives.
