                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Many proud residents of the city of Hillsboro will
    1-2  travel to the State Capitol on April 5, 1995, to celebrate
    1-3  Hillsboro Day in Austin; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, With its rich history dating back to the year 1853,
    1-5  when Hill County was founded by a group of hardworking Texas
    1-6  pioneers, Hillsboro became the center of the second largest cotton
    1-7  producing county in the world near the turn of the century; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Today, Hillsboro remains a community bustling with
    1-9  energy, excitement, and economic growth that is thriving under the
   1-10  dynamic leadership of Mayor Henry Moore and city council members
   1-11  Ted Whitley, Johnie Wilson, Jim Riggins, Raymond Trompler, Betty
   1-12  Amuso, and Harry Payne; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, This magnificent city contains countless buildings
   1-14  of architectural and historical significance to the state and the
   1-15  nation, including the  1893 Hill County Jail and the restored 1881
   1-16  MKT railroad depot, which have been placed on the National Register
   1-17  of Historic Places; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, This community takes great pride in its unique
   1-19  history that has contributed to the city's recent renaissance;
   1-20  along with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the
   1-21  citizens, businesses, and government of Hillsboro have united to
   1-22  create Texas' first Main Street Program, a project that has led to
   1-23  the renovation of the downtown commercial area and of a residential
   1-24  neighborhood containing more than 250 exquisite homes of historical
    2-1  and architectural significance; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Hillsboro also is the site of the Hill County
    2-3  Courthouse, named one of Texas' 10 Most Historic Properties of 1993
    2-4  by the Texas Historical Commission; designed by W. C. Dodson, this
    2-5  1890 Second-Empire style structure was destroyed in a tragic fire
    2-6  on January 1, 1993, but the community has rallied to rebuild the
    2-7  structure and its exterior restoration is currently underway; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, Boasting numerous antique shops and document
    2-9  collections, this lovely city is the home of The Col. Harold B.
   2-10  Simpson Confederate Research Center and the Audie L. Murphy Gun
   2-11  Museum, both of which are located on the Hill College campus; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, The people of Hillsboro are indeed deserving of the
   2-13  attention their city receives from both tourists and historians;
   2-14  this year they will gather to celebrate their town's heritage,
   2-15  spirit, and hopes for the future at such events as the Confederate
   2-16  History Symposium, Cotton Pickin' Fair, Bond's Alley Arts and
   2-17  Crafts Festival, and Hillsboro Christmas parade; and
   2-18        WHEREAS, Determined to preserve their city's distinguished
   2-19  heritage for future generations, the citizens of Hillsboro have
   2-20  played a key role in Texas' economic and cultural history, and
   2-21  their many exceptional contributions to the Lone Star State are
   2-22  indeed worthy of special legislative recognition and gratitude;
   2-23  now, therefore, be it
   2-24        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-25  Legislature hereby recognize April 5, 1995, as Hillsboro Day at the
   2-26  State Capitol and join with the citizens of Hillsboro in paying
   2-27  tribute to one of Texas' finest cities; and, be it further
    3-1        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-2  prepared for the city of Hillsboro as a commemoration of this grand
    3-3  occasion and as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
    3-4  Representatives.
