                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Billie Jean Hanna has been named a 1994 Hero for
    1-2  Children, and this special recognition is indeed well deserved; and
    1-3        WHEREAS, This prestigious honor is presented each year to
    1-4  recognize excellence in advocacy benefiting the schoolchildren of
    1-5  Texas, and Ms. Hanna's outstanding involvement in behalf of this
    1-6  worthy goal not only meets this criterion but sets a high standard
    1-7  to which others can aspire; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Ms. Hanna was chosen by a panel of distinguished
    1-9  judges to represent District 13 of the State Board of Education
   1-10  from among a host of accomplished nominees whose names were
   1-11  submitted for consideration by local civic and educational groups;
   1-12  and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Ms. Hanna is herself a product of the local public
   1-14  school system, having graduated from Kemp High School at the age of
   1-15  16; she went on to earn a bachelor's degree in business education
   1-16  from Texas Woman's University before beginning an outstanding
   1-17  29-year tenure as a teacher for the Kemp Independent School
   1-18  District and three years of teaching experience at Trinity Valley
   1-19  Community College; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, For nearly three decades, this talented educator
   1-21  excelled in the classroom while helping many of her students
   1-22  develop a greater sense of dignity and self-esteem by supporting
   1-23  them in their extracurricular activities as the school's yearbook
   1-24  sponsor, National Beta Club sponsor, and drill team and cheerleader
    2-1  sponsor; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Ms. Hanna is currently in the midst of her seventh
    2-3  year as a trustee of the Kemp school board and serves in that
    2-4  capacity with five of her former students; throughout her teaching
    2-5  career, this remarkable woman earned a special place in the hearts
    2-6  of many of her students and, by her example, inspired a number of
    2-7  them to embark on teaching careers of their own; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, Far from restricting her activities to the
    2-9  educational arena, this dynamic individual has long played an
   2-10  active role in making her community a better place in which to live
   2-11  and raise a family, and she has demonstrated her sincere dedication
   2-12  to area citizens through her involvement in the past as a member of
   2-13  the city council and the chamber of commerce, as a youth leader in
   2-14  the Methodist Church, and as a counselor for the Boy Scouts of
   2-15  America; and
   2-16        WHEREAS, A charter member of the Kiwanis Club, Ms. Hanna
   2-17  currently serves her community as a municipal court judge, as an
   2-18  ombudsman for a nursing home, and as a board member of the Kaufman
   2-19  County American Heart Association and Kaufman County Children's
   2-20  Protective Services; and
   2-21        WHEREAS, Billie Jean Hanna has touched the lives of countless
   2-22  individuals through her exemplary involvement in the field of
   2-23  education and, on the occasion of her most recent achievement, it
   2-24  is an opportune time to honor her for her valuable service; now,
   2-25  therefore, be it
   2-26        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-27  Legislature hereby congratulate Billie Jean Hanna on being named a
    3-1  1994 Hero for Children and extend to her warmest best wishes for
    3-2  continued success and happiness in the years to come; and, be it
    3-3  further
    3-4        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-5  prepared for Ms. Hanna as an expression of high regard by the Texas
    3-6  House of Representatives.
