H.R. No. 566 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Howard E. Jefferson was recently elected president 1-2 of the Houston branch of the National Association for the 1-3 Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and this special recognition 1-4 is indeed well deserved; and 1-5 WHEREAS, This fine gentleman brings to his new position a 1-6 wealth of valuable education acquired as a result of the rigorous 1-7 academic standards he set for himself in his youth; a graduate of 1-8 Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with a bachelor's 1-9 degree, he was the recipient of an academic year fellowship in 1-10 science and mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin and 1-11 subsequently earned a master's degree in administration and 1-12 supervision from the University of Houston; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Mr. Jefferson has more than 30 years of experience 1-14 in education and supervision and most recently has served as an 1-15 assistant superintendent for the Houston Independent School 1-16 District, one of the largest independent school districts in the 1-17 state; yet, despite the demands of his busy professional life, he 1-18 has long played an active role in making his community a better 1-19 place in which to live and work by involving himself in many causes 1-20 he holds dear; and 1-21 WHEREAS, This dedicated civic leader has shared his time and 1-22 talents to the benefit of the city as a condemnation hearing 1-23 officer for the county courts of Harris County and through his 1-24 leadership on the Board of Commissioners of the Houston Housing 2-1 Authority, the city's Urban Policy Advisory Board and the Gulf 2-2 Coast Community Services Association; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Mr. Jefferson also has distinguished himself through 2-4 his valuable work with a number of other local organizations, 2-5 including the Center for Transportation Training and Research of 2-6 Texas Southern University, the Board of Managers of the YMCA, the 2-7 executive board of the Houston Principals' Association, the Martin 2-8 Luther King Health Center, and the Sam Houston Area Council Boy 2-9 Scouts Advisory Committee, to name but a few; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Though he is currently serving as chair of the Small 2-11 Business Development Corporation and as a member of the Harris 2-12 County Board of Education, this esteemed gentleman has graciously 2-13 agreed to take on the challenges and duties inherent in serving as 2-14 president of the local branch of the NAACP, and his previous 2-15 experience on the organization's executive board and as its vice 2-16 president will undoubtedly serve him well as he continues to work 2-17 toward advancing the cherished goals of brotherhood and equality 2-18 for all people; now, therefore, be it 2-19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-20 Legislature hereby congratulate Howard E. Jefferson on his election 2-21 as president of the Houston branch of the NAACP and commend him for 2-22 the many significant contributions he has made to the betterment of 2-23 his community throughout his many years of civic service; and, be 2-24 it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-26 prepared for Mr. Jefferson as an expression of high regard by the 2-27 Texas House of Representatives.
