No. 591 74R10384 PFG-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On April 9, 1995, the members of the Curvey family 1-2 gathered at Sunnyside Baptist Church in Houston to join with 1-3 Reverend Elbert Curvey, Jr., in a celebration of Curvey Family Day, 1-4 an annual tradition that is devoted to worship, song, and the 1-5 joyous renewal of the bonds of kinship that unite the members of 1-6 this remarkable family; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Reverend Curvey founded the Sunnyside Baptist 1-8 Church, formerly known as Pentecostal Baptist Church, on 1-9 Thanksgiving Day in 1960 and has ably served as its pastor 1-10 throughout the ensuing 35 years; under his leadership, the 1-11 congregation has grown from 19 original members to the nearly 500 1-12 members it enjoys today who regularly assemble to hear the 1-13 inspirational words of this dynamic minister; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Born May 24, 1924, Reverend Curvey earned both his 1-15 bachelor's degree and his master's degree from Prairie View A&M 1-16 University; for the past 47 years, he has enjoyed a happy and 1-17 rewarding marriage to the former Doris Cooper, and their marriage 1-18 was blessed by the birth of three children, Marcus Randolph, who is 1-19 now married and the husband of Rose Grant, Michael Cooper, the 1-20 husband of Sonja Bihms, and a daughter, the late Sandra Dranelle 1-21 Curvey; and 1-22 WHEREAS, In recent years, Reverend and Mrs. Curvey have been 1-23 filled with pride as their family has grown to include several 1-24 grandchildren, Gabrielle Dranelle, Marcus Randolph, Jr., Yumeka 2-1 Fione, and Michael Cooper, Jr., all of whom are a source of endless 2-2 delight to their grandparents; and 2-3 WHEREAS, A recognized leader in his community, Reverend 2-4 Curvey is active in local civic affairs and has united with his 2-5 peers to support law enforcement as a member of the group Ministers 2-6 Against Crime; responsible for leading efforts to establish the 2-7 Houston Police Department Sunnyside Storefront, he also has been 2-8 called on in the past by state and local leaders to serve as 2-9 president of the citizens advisory council to the Texas Department 2-10 on Aging, and he was appointed by Houston Mayor Bob Lanier to serve 2-11 on the city's citizens review committee; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Reverend Curvey and the members of his family 2-13 gathered together to celebrate the first annual Curvey Family Day 2-14 in 1982, and, in the ensuing years, the event has become a very 2-15 special tradition for this fine Christian family and a fitting 2-16 complement to the Curvey Family Reunion Weekend held each 2-17 September; and 2-18 WHEREAS, The idea for a shared day of worship with family was 2-19 originally conceived by Reverend Curvey and family members Gilbert 2-20 Curvey, Maxine Curvey, Willie Louis Curvey, Harry Curvey, and Troy 2-21 Curvey, Sr., and the event owes much of its success to their hard 2-22 work and inspiration, as well as to its many other participants, 2-23 whose efforts make this memorable day each spring a worthwhile and 2-24 eagerly anticipated occasion; and 2-25 WHEREAS, Reverend Elbert Curvey, Jr., has made many lasting 2-26 and positive contributions to the Houston community, and his 2-27 endeavors and those of all the Curvey family members are indeed 3-1 deserving of special praise and recognition at this time; now, 3-2 therefore, be it 3-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 3-4 Legislature hereby honor Reverend Elbert Curvey, Jr., for his 3-5 exemplary service to others and commemorate April 9, 1995, as 3-6 Curvey Family Day in recognition of the many excellent 3-7 contributions made by this fine Texas family; and, be it further 3-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-9 prepared for the Curvey family as an expression of highest regard 3-10 by the Texas House of Representatives.
