No. 592 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 the Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center in Houston for its 1-3 outstanding contributions to the citizens it serves; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A comprehensive social service agency founded 27 1-5 years ago, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center is located 1-6 in the east end of Houston, a densely populated low income area; 1-7 and 1-8 WHEREAS, With financial support from many sources including 1-9 churches, business and industry, foundations, and state and federal 1-10 funds, the center provides a variety of services to residents of 1-11 the neighborhood in a community-wide effort to help the less 1-12 fortunate to help themselves; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Awarded a joint venture grant from the United States 1-14 Health and Human Services Agency, the Texas Department of Human 1-15 Services, and the City of Houston Health and Human Services 1-16 Department, the center was the first child care facility in Texas 1-17 to receive a federal grant to assist families in crisis; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Starting with infants, the center provides day care 1-19 for children of all ages, a reading and study library, a drug 1-20 prevention program, a juvenile delinquency prevention program, boy 1-21 scouting, and a senior citizens program; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Governed by a board of directors, the Martin Luther 1-23 King, Jr., Community Center is under the expert supervision of 2-1 Executive Director Madgelean Bush; all the staff members are 2-2 trained by various associations, including the Texas Department of 2-3 Human Services specialists; now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th 2-5 Legislature hereby recognize the board of directors, the staff, and 2-6 the men and women who volunteer their time and services to the 2-7 Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center; and, be it further 2-8 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-9 center as an expression of highest regard from the Texas House of 2-10 Representatives.
