                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
    1-2  the Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha
    1-3  Sorority, Inc., as its members commemorate 65 years of
    1-4  extraordinary service to the citizens of San Antonio; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The chapter was founded in 1930 under the auspices
    1-6  of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, which was the first sorority
    1-7  established by and for African-American women, and since its
    1-8  inception, ATO has sought to improve the lives of the elderly,
    1-9  disabled, and disadvantaged residents of the Alamo City through an
   1-10  ever-expanding roster of vital social service programs; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, The efforts of ATO have focused attention on the
   1-12  needs of these often overlooked individuals and have led to the
   1-13  establishment of a number of worthy projects in the community such
   1-14  as the Roseville Apartments, which were completed in 1970 and serve
   1-15  as a welcome haven for the elderly, disabled, and disadvantaged
   1-16  residents of the city's east side, and the Senior Opportunity
   1-17  Services program (SOS), which provides essential support services
   1-18  to residents of Roseville as well as other east-side residents; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Today, the members of ATO help to direct the SOS
   1-20  program, a senior center with a respite day-care program, and a
   1-21  countywide transportation service that enables residents to attend
   1-22  doctor appointments, to shop for groceries, or just to get out of
   1-23  the house for a little recreation--outings that though routine are
   1-24  vital to their health and emotional well-being; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, The sisters of this outstanding organization promote
    2-2  academic achievement in the African-American community through
    2-3  their sponsorship of reading and cultural awareness programs and a
    2-4  wide variety of scholarships and financial awards, and also give
    2-5  generously of their resources to support the United Negro College
    2-6  Fund, the NAACP, the American Cancer Society, and a number of other
    2-7  deserving organizations; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, In addition, ATO members have logged countless
    2-9  volunteer hours providing enthusiastic assistance to such
   2-10  worthwhile groups as the San Antonio Library Board Foundation, the
   2-11  Manor Square Nursing Home, the Women's Shelter, the Carver Cultural
   2-12  Center, and the United Way, to name but a few; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, For more than six decades, the women of Alpha Tau
   2-14  Omega have made a lasting and positive impact on the health and
   2-15  welfare of countless residents of San Antonio, and it is indeed
   2-16  fitting that they receive special praise and recognition on the
   2-17  occasion of their chapter's 65th anniversary; now, therefore, be it
   2-18        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-19  Legislature hereby commend the dedicated members of the Alpha Tau
   2-20  Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for their noteworthy
   2-21  record of civic service; and, be it further
   2-22        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-23  prepared for Alpha Tau Omega as an expression of highest regard by
   2-24  the Texas House of Representatives.
