                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The passing of Jeannine Sutherland on November 28,
    1-2  1994, has brought a great loss to the family and friends of this
    1-3  courageous woman as well as to her community and state; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Mrs. Sutherland devoted much of her life to building
    1-5  a warm and supportive home for her husband, Dr. Duncan Sutherland,
    1-6  with whom she exchanged vows in 1960, and for her three beloved
    1-7  children, Sue, Pam, and Bill; a resident of Amarillo since 1971,
    1-8  she was an active member of her community of faith at Westminster
    1-9  Presbyterian Church; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Mrs. Sutherland became an activist in the fight
   1-11  against acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) after she
   1-12  contracted the disease from a blood transfusion in 1983; this
   1-13  exceptional Texan embarked on a personal crusade to promote AIDS
   1-14  education and understanding, speaking about AIDS at local schools
   1-15  and organizations and focusing special attention on women at risk;
   1-16  and
   1-17        WHEREAS, The president of the Medical Auxiliary,
   1-18  Mrs. Sutherland was a board member for her local Ronald McDonald
   1-19  House, an organization that provides a home to parents of
   1-20  hospitalized children during their time of need, and her tireless
   1-21  efforts won her the respect and admiration of all those in her
   1-22  community; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Mrs. Sutherland's legacy of kindness and
   1-24  selflessness will live on for future generations; Camp Cactus, the
    2-1  Jeannine Sutherland Camp for Children Affected by AIDS, will offer
    2-2  a nurturing and supportive camp experience to all children who are
    2-3  affected by AIDS, whether they have this disease or their parents
    2-4  have it; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to know Mrs. Sutherland
    2-6  will not quickly forget the rare courage and compassion she
    2-7  displayed in every facet of her life, and although her presence is
    2-8  gone from us now, her memory will continue to live on in the hearts
    2-9  of the many people whose lives she touched during her years on this
   2-10  earth; now, therefore, be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-12  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Jeannine Sutherland
   2-13  and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family:  to her
   2-14  husband, Dr. Duncan Sutherland; to her daughters, Sue Walker and
   2-15  Pam Fyfe; to her son, Bill Sutherland; to her sister, Marge
   2-16  Carlson; to her five grandchildren; and to her many other friends
   2-17  and relatives; and, be it further
   2-18        RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
   2-19  for the members of her family and that when the Texas House of
   2-20  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jeannine
   2-21  Sutherland.
