H.R. No. 611 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 The University of Texas at Dallas and the members of its Texas 1-3 government class on the occasion of their visit to the State 1-4 Capitol on April 18, 1995; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Founded in 1969, the university has parallel 1-6 missions: to achieve preeminence in undergraduate math, science, 1-7 and engineering education in the North Texas region, and to 1-8 continue its traditional role of providing ongoing professional 1-9 education to local adult and transfer students; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The university began as a graduate school and 1-11 accepted its first junior and senior undergraduates in 1976; 13 1-12 years later, the school opened its doors to freshmen and 1-13 sophomores, offering a new opportunity for the best and brightest 1-14 Texas high school students to study in a rigorous and fulfilling 1-15 academic environment; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Its seven schools offer course work in a variety of 1-17 disciplines, from arts and humanities to engineering and computer 1-18 sciences, and the university offers 76 degree programs; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Although the university is relatively young, it has 1-20 achieved national recognition for its academic prowess, and its 1-21 freshman classes have consistently been ranked among the best of 1-22 any public university in the country; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Moreover, the university fielded its first college 1-24 bowl team in 1994, and the team surpassed all expectations by 2-1 advancing to the finals in national competition; this year's team 2-2 also has achieved academic renown, and after defeating traditional 2-3 powerhouses to become the regional champion, members will compete 2-4 in the prestigious national contest in late April 1995; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Recognized as the primary upper-division university 2-6 in the eastern half of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, the 2-7 university plays an important role in the local business community 2-8 and is the focal point for important industrial research; and 2-9 WHEREAS, By traveling to the Capitol to see their state 2-10 government in action, these visiting students have demonstrated the 2-11 academic drive and commitment that is typical of students at The 2-12 University of Texas at Dallas; this outstanding university has done 2-13 an admirable job of preparing the future leaders and 2-14 decision-makers of our state, and its many talented faculty, staff, 2-15 and students are most worthy of our special praise and recognition 2-16 at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-18 Legislature hereby commend The University of Texas at Dallas for 2-19 its outstanding efforts to educate our state's future leaders and 2-20 extend an official welcome to the school's visiting faculty and 2-21 students; and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-23 prepared for The University of Texas at Dallas as an expression of 2-24 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
