R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, On April 22, 1995, Amy Hernandez will be honored as
1-2 the Houston Independent School District's Librarian of the Year at
1-3 the Houston Association of School Librarians' annual banquet; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hernandez was born into a proud family of
1-5 educators; her father worked for many years as a teacher and
1-6 part-time librarian and was promoted to the position of district
1-7 supervisor, while her mother distinguished herself as a principal;
1-8 and
1-9 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hernandez developed her abiding love for books
1-10 at an early age, excelling in competitions with her younger
1-11 siblings to see which of them could read the most books; she
1-12 decided to become a librarian after attending a lecture by a
1-13 visiting college professor, whose key phrase, "You have to entice,
1-14 seduce, cajole your readers so they will love books and reading,"
1-15 became imbedded in her mind; and
1-16 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hernandez immigrated to the United States to
1-17 fulfill her career goals and began working as a librarian at a
1-18 small high school in Orange, Virginia; a skilled professional, she
1-19 helped the library to almost double its collection while weeding
1-20 out the outdated books and updating information files, and she was
1-21 rewarded for her outstanding efforts when the library was finally
1-22 accredited by the state; and
1-23 WHEREAS, Deeply committed to her chosen profession, she
1-24 continued her studies during this period, earning a master's degree
2-1 in education from the University of Virginia and a master's degree
2-2 in library science from George Peabody School in Tennessee; and
2-3 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hernandez later relocated to Houston; she was
2-4 assigned to Fonville Middle School before transferring to Sam
2-5 Houston High School in 1984, where she has been instrumental in
2-6 improving and updating the school's library technology; and
2-7 WHEREAS, Her high degree of professionalism and genuine
2-8 commitment to her work have been a great source of inspiration to
2-9 many people, and it is indeed appropriate that she receive special
2-10 legislative recognition on the occasion of her most recent honor;
2-11 now, therefore, be it
2-12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
2-13 Legislature hereby honor Amy Hernandez for the many significant
2-14 contributions she has made as a school librarian and congratulate
2-15 her on her designation as Librarian of the Year for 1995-1996; and,
2-16 be it further
2-17 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-18 prepared for Mrs. Hernandez as an expression of high regard by the
2-19 Texas House of Representatives.
