No. 643 74R11113 MPC-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, George Foreman has been selected to receive the 1-2 Outstanding Texan award in the area of entertainment/sports and 1-3 arts by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, and this special 1-4 recognition is indeed well deserved; and 1-5 WHEREAS, George Foreman began his championship career by 1-6 winning a coveted gold medal in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City; 1-7 and 1-8 WHEREAS, This exceptional athlete became heavyweight champion 1-9 of the world for the first time in 1973, overcoming the legendary 1-10 Joe Frazier to assume the World Boxing Association/International 1-11 Boxing Federation title; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Seven years after his retirement in 1987, George 1-13 Foreman regained his title as heavyweight champion of the world on 1-14 November 5, 1994, with a thunderous combination of punches that 1-15 sent Michael Moorer to the canvas in the 10th round of their 1-16 championship bout; and 1-17 WHEREAS, George Foreman has become the oldest competitor ever 1-18 to win the heavyweight crown and his 68 victories by knockout 1-19 represent the highest percentage ever achieved by a boxer in the 1-20 heavyweight division; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Throughout his extraordinary career, George Foreman 1-22 has displayed the heart of a champion and his inspirational 1-23 achievements in the sport of boxing are indeed worthy of special 1-24 praise and recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-2 Legislature hereby congratulate George Foreman on his receipt of 2-3 the Legislative Black Caucus Outstanding Texan award in the 2-4 category of entertainment/sports and arts and extend to him 2-5 heartfelt best wishes for continued success in the future; and, be 2-6 it further 2-7 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-8 prepared for Mr. Foreman as an expression of high regard by the 2-9 Texas House of Representatives.
