R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
1-2 welcome legendary football player Tony Dorsett to the State
1-3 Capitol; and
1-4 WHEREAS, A native of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, he was born
1-5 April 7, 1954, to Myrtle and Westley Dorsett and was the sixth of
1-6 seven children in the close-knit Dorsett family; and
1-7 WHEREAS, This exceptional individual found his own personal
1-8 path to success in the field of athletics; a star running back at
1-9 the University of Pittsburgh, he carried the Panthers to the
1-10 national championship in football and also earned individual
1-11 distinction as a four-time All-American and as a winner of college
1-12 football's highest honor, the Heisman Trophy; and
1-13 WHEREAS, Mr. Dorsett continued his stellar athletic career as
1-14 a Dallas Cowboy and, as he did in college, led his squad to the
1-15 pinnacle of success by taking the Cowboys to victory in the Super
1-16 Bowl; and
1-17 WHEREAS, In recognition of his status as one of the finest
1-18 athletes ever to take to the football field, Mr. Dorsett was
1-19 inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the Dallas
1-20 Cowboy Ring of Honor and in 1994 was accorded the ultimate accolade
1-21 by taking his place in the National Football League's Hall of Fame;
1-22 and
1-23 WHEREAS, Mr. Dorsett has recently devoted his efforts to a
1-24 variety of worthy community endeavors, acting as a sponsor for a
2-1 golf tournament benefiting the McGuire Memorial Foundation Home for
2-2 Severely Retarded Children and giving freely of his time and talent
2-3 to mentor today's youth through appearances and motivational
2-4 speeches; and
2-5 WHEREAS, Whether tearing up the gridiron as a star running
2-6 back or providing a broader avenue of opportunity to those within
2-7 his community, Tony Dorsett has, throughout his lifetime, been an
2-8 inspirational figure to his countless fans the world over, and his
2-9 many significant achievements in this regard are truly worthy of
2-10 special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
2-12 Legislature hereby honor Tony Dorsett for his exemplary
2-13 accomplishments as an athlete and community leader on the occasion
2-14 of his visit to the State Capitol; and, be it further
2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16 prepared for Mr. Dorsett as an expression of high regard by the
2-17 Texas House of Representatives.
