H.R. No. 698 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of Harvey Penick on April 2, 1-2 1995, at the age of 90, has brought a great loss to the many 1-3 friends, relatives, and admirers of this legendary sports figure 1-4 and author; and 1-5 WHEREAS, After graduating from high school in 1923, this 1-6 extraordinary individual became the head golf pro at Austin Country 1-7 Club, and over the course of nearly half a century in that 1-8 capacity, he cheerfully helped numerous fellow golfers to pare 1-9 strokes from their game; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Mr. Penick also served as coach of the golf team at 1-11 The University of Texas at Austin from 1931 to 1963, and during his 1-12 remarkable tenure with the university, he successfully led the 1-13 Longhorn linksters to national prominence in their sport; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Universally acclaimed for his innate ability to 1-15 markedly improve the golf game of those he instructed, Mr. Penick 1-16 had as some of his most notable pupils Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, 1-17 Mickey Wright, and Betsy Rawls; and 1-18 WHEREAS, A talented student of human nature as well, 1-19 Mr. Penick coauthored Harvey Penick's Little Red Book with Bud 1-20 Shrake, and the book, which successfully combined insightful 1-21 instruction with anecdotes about golf and life, became a 1-22 bestseller, eventually selling more than one million copies; he 1-23 also authored two more volumes, And If You Play Golf, You're My 1-24 Friend and For All Who Love the Game, imbuing in those works the 2-1 elegant simplicity of observation that was his trademark; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Harvey Penick was a man whose encyclopedic knowledge 2-3 of the game of golf was surpassed only by his ability to 2-4 communicate that information to others in a simple and instructive 2-5 manner; although his warmth and wisdom are gone from us now, his 2-6 unique spirit will surely live on in the hearts of the many people 2-7 whose lives he touched during his time on this earth; now, 2-8 therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-10 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Harvey Penick and 2-11 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, 2-12 Helen; to his daughter and son-in-law, Katherine Lee and Bill 2-13 Powell; to his son and daughter-in-law, Tinsley and Betty Ann 2-14 Penick; to his four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and 2-15 to the many other friends and relatives of this beloved gentleman; 2-16 and, be it further 2-17 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-18 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-19 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-20 Harvey Penick.
