No. 703 74R10967 PFG-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Susan Mann, the director of the Hillsboro City 1-2 Library, was recently named the Small Community Librarian of the 1-3 Year for 1994, and this special recognition is indeed well 1-4 deserved; and 1-5 WHEREAS, This prestigious award is presented each year by the 1-6 Texas Library Association's Small Community Libraries Round Table, 1-7 whose more than 800 members represent 300 libraries from across the 1-8 state that provide vital services to communities of fewer than 1-9 25,000 residents; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The director of the Hillsboro City Library since 1-11 1985, Ms. Mann has presided over a decade of rapid growth and 1-12 innovation at the library, making efficient use of available 1-13 resources to add 8,000 new books to its holdings, increase magazine 1-14 subscriptions, and install an integrated computer system that has 1-15 greatly enhanced the manner in which the library can serve the 1-16 public; in addition, under her adept guidance, work has been 1-17 started on an important remodeling project that will bring the 1-18 library into compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act; 1-19 and 1-20 WHEREAS, Recognizing the vital role that reading plays in a 1-21 child's development, Ms. Mann also is planning for the expansion of 1-22 services for children at the library with the addition of a new 1-23 children's wing, a project that is off to a great start through the 1-24 efforts of the newly formed Friends of the Library group, whose 2-1 members have already raised $11,000 in support of this worthy goal; 2-2 and 2-3 WHEREAS, Ms. Mann is widely respected in her field, having 2-4 amassed 17 years of experience in the library profession and held 2-5 numerous leadership posts with the Texas Library Association (TLA), 2-6 the Central Texas Library System, the Small Community Libraries 2-7 Round Table, and the Texas State Library; assuming an even more 2-8 visible role of late, she was recently tapped to represent the 2-9 perspective of the TLA before the state legislature in a 2-10 subcommittee hearing of the House Appropriations Committee and 2-11 served as a leader for the TLA delegation at the association's 2-12 legislative day in Austin; and 2-13 WHEREAS, A dedicated wife and mother as well, Ms. Mann enjoys 2-14 an extraordinarily happy marriage to Art Mann, the editor of the 2-15 Hillsboro Reporter; the couple also have a daughter, Peggy, who has 2-16 brought them much joy through her many endeavors and achievements; 2-17 and 2-18 WHEREAS, During her outstanding tenure, Susan Mann has 2-19 transformed the Hillsboro City Library into an excellent 2-20 institution in which local citizens can take great pride, and she 2-21 has truly earned special recognition for her continuing 2-22 contributions in this regard; now, therefore, be it 2-23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-24 Legislature hereby congratulate Susan Mann on being named the 1994 2-25 Small Community Librarian of the Year by the Small Community 2-26 Libraries Round Table of the Texas Library Association; and, be it 2-27 further 3-1 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-2 prepared for Ms. Mann as an expression of highest regard by the 3-3 Texas House of Representatives.
