No. 708 74R11013 BNL-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Dr. Bettye Whiteaker is leaving her position as 1-2 president of the Dallas County Dental Society, and the leadership 1-3 and expertise she brought to this post will be greatly missed; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A native of Tennessee, this esteemed dentist 1-5 completed her undergraduate studies at Union University in Jackson, 1-6 Tennessee, before earning a master's degree in chemistry from 1-7 Oklahoma State University; she furthered her education by 1-8 completing graduate studies at Baylor College of Dentistry and 1-9 established her periodontal practice in 1970; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Since then, she has become a leader in this field 1-11 and has contributed her time and extensive knowledge to numerous 1-12 professional organizations; in addition to her work with the Dallas 1-13 County Dental Society, she has served in leadership positions with 1-14 the Texas Dental Association and Baylor College of Dentistry; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Moreover, she reached out to an international 1-16 audience as a guest on the Southern Baptist Radio and Television 1-17 talk show "LifeStyle," in which capacity she shared crucial health 1-18 information about dental-related headaches; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Despite her busy professional schedule, Dr. 1-20 Whiteaker has given generously of her time and resources to benefit 1-21 her community through her work with the YMCA, the Visiting Nurse 1-22 Association, and the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce; an ardent 1-23 supporter of her alma maters, Union University and Baylor College 1-24 of Dentistry, this remarkable woman also is devoted to her strong 2-1 religious faith and has modeled her beliefs for others as an 2-2 involved participant in Cliff Temple Baptist Church and the Baptist 2-3 General Convention of Texas; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Honored extensively for her many contributions and 2-5 achievements, she is the proud recipient of the Dallas Baptist 2-6 University-Oak Cliff Community Samaritan Award and distinguished 2-7 alumna awards from both Union University and Baylor College of 2-8 Dentistry; in addition, Dr. Whiteaker was the first female to earn 2-9 the Baylor College of Dentistry Gold Medal for Highest Scholastic 2-10 Achievement, and she recently received an honorary doctor of 2-11 humanities from Dallas Baptist University; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Throughout her many endeavors, she has enjoyed the 2-13 love and support of her husband, Dr. Kermit E. Whiteaker, who has 2-14 distinguished himself as senior vice president of the Southern 2-15 Baptist Convention Annuity Board; and 2-16 WHEREAS, Through both her professional work and her tireless 2-17 community service, Dr. Bettye Whiteaker has contributed greatly to 2-18 the betterment of the Dallas community, and her outstanding efforts 2-19 are indeed worthy of highest praise and recognition; now, 2-20 therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-22 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Bettye Whiteaker for her service as 2-23 president of the Dallas County Dental Society and extend to her 2-24 warmest best wishes for continued success in her future endeavors; 2-25 and, be it further 2-26 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-27 prepared for Dr. Whiteaker as an expression of high regard by the 3-1 Texas House of Representatives.
