No. 756 74R9904 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The McAllen Rowe High School Warriors boys' 1-2 basketball team has achieved outstanding success during the 1-3 1994-1995 season, having won the District 31-5A cochampionship and 1-4 a coveted place in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 1-5 Class 5A state tournament; and 1-6 WHEREAS, In only its third year of existence, McAllen Rowe 1-7 High School has become a dominant force in the sport of basketball; 1-8 the Warriors finished the 1994-1995 campaign with a superb record 1-9 of 29 wins and only six defeats, including a phenomenal 14-game 1-10 winning streak; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The season's outstanding accomplishments were the 1-12 result of a total team effort from members Bobby Flores, Hernnan 1-13 Guzman, Mario Villasenor, Pete Lozano, Roman Gonzalez, Mark Rios, 1-14 Rene Guzman, Roger Cantu, Kevin Callaway, Albert Salinas, Andres 1-15 Ruiz, Joe Dominguez, Jason Young, Mark Pierce, and Ruben Garza; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Although each player made significant contributions 1-17 to the team's overall success, squad members Bobby Flores and 1-18 Andres Ruiz also earned individual honors as members of the 1-19 all-area first team; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Head coach Romy A. Vela, Jr., who was chosen by The 1-21 Monitor as coach of the year for the Hidalgo and Starr county 1-22 areas, inspired his charges to consistently compete at the highest 1-23 level, and he was ably supported in all his efforts by assistant 1-24 coach Oscar Diaz and assistant varsity coach Robert Flores; other 2-1 invaluable assistance was provided by trainer Dwayne McAlister, 2-2 manager Cris Briseno, athletic coordinator Bucky Rodriguez, 2-3 athletic director Poppy Rodriguez, and principal Ed Wachtel; and 2-4 WHEREAS, This exemplary group of young men and their coaches 2-5 and staff are a tremendous source of pride to the students and 2-6 faculty of McAllen Rowe High School and their many supporters in 2-7 the community; with the success of the 1994-1995 season, the 2-8 Warriors have advanced further in basketball competition than any 2-9 other public school in the Valley in more than a decade, and their 2-10 outstanding achievement is indeed worthy of special legislative 2-11 recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-13 Legislature hereby congratulate the McAllen Rowe High School 2-14 Warriors boys' basketball team on winning the District 31-5A 2-15 cochampionship and earning an appearance in the UIL Class 5A 2-16 tournament and extend sincere best wishes to the team and its 2-17 coaches for continued success in the future; and, be it further 2-18 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared 2-19 for the team and its coaches and for prominent display at McAllen 2-20 Rowe High School as an expression of high regard by the Texas House 2-21 of Representatives.
