No. 789 74R10032 BNL-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, From its humble beginnings as a railroad town in 1-2 1872, the City of Gladewater has grown into a thriving community 1-3 that is renowned throughout East Texas for its outstanding 1-4 selection of antique and craft shops; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Though this picturesque city has a modest population 1-6 of just over 6,000 residents, the town houses in excess of 150 1-7 antique and antique-related dealers, filling most of the available 1-8 retail storefronts in Gladewater and offering tourists, bargain 1-9 hunters, and antique enthusiasts a staggering array of shopping 1-10 venues; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The citizens of this quaint and charming town, in 1-12 cooperation with the Gladewater Chamber of Commerce, the Antique 1-13 Dealers Association, and several financial institutions, have 1-14 labored untiringly to promote this unique aspect of their 1-15 community, and their efforts have been rewarded with great success; 1-16 and 1-17 WHEREAS, Thousands of visitors from throughout Texas, the 1-18 United States, and even foreign countries travel to Gladewater each 1-19 year to browse, shop, dine, and participate in the many festive 1-20 activities that the town offers; these tourists have a tremendous 1-21 impact on the local economy and have helped to create numerous 1-22 employment opportunities, enabling this booming local industry to 1-23 in turn benefit the entire state; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Informally heralded as the Antique Capital of East 2-1 Texas for many years now, Gladewater has consistently lived up to 2-2 its billing and thus, in accordance with the wishes of the good 2-3 citizens of that town, it is altogether fitting and proper that the 2-4 State of Texas officially bestow that title upon the City of 2-5 Gladewater; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby proclaim the community of Gladewater to be the 2-8 Antique Capital of East Texas and commend its residents for their 2-9 exemplary efforts in building one of East Texas' finest 2-10 communities; and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-12 prepared for prominent display in Gladewater as an expression of 2-13 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
