                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
    1-2  Nancy Adams of Elliott Grant Middle School for her recent selection
    1-3  as Texas Secondary School Teacher of the Year in the Corpus Christi
    1-4  area; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Destined to become a teacher at an early age,
    1-6  Ms. Adams was instilled with a deep and abiding love for learning
    1-7  by her parents, who both worked as educators; her mother's
    1-8  dedication and contagious love for teaching helped Ms. Adams to see
    1-9  that school could be a pleasant place that also offered great
   1-10  rewards, and some of the people she has admired most in her life
   1-11  have been teachers; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, An outstanding student, she completed her
   1-13  undergraduate studies in history and government at The University
   1-14  of Texas at Austin in 1968 and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa
   1-15  honor society;  and
   1-16        WHEREAS, She began her distinguished career in education as a
   1-17  history teacher at L. L. Shannon Junior High School in 1968 and was
   1-18  a positive influence in the lives of two generations of students
   1-19  during 20 years of service at the school; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Deeply committed to her chosen profession, she
   1-21  continued her studies during this period, receiving a master's
   1-22  degree from Corpus Christi State University in 1988; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Ms. Adams went on to work with Harold C. Kaffie
   1-24  Middle School from 1988 to 1994, distinguishing herself as both an
    2-1  instructor and assistant principal; she accepted her current post
    2-2  as an eighth-grade American history teacher with Elliott Grant
    2-3  Middle School in 1994 and graciously serves as a team leader for
    2-4  the grade; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Throughout her professional career, she has been
    2-6  deeply committed to enhancing the educational opportunities of all
    2-7  her students, and she has helped to make history come alive for
    2-8  them through history fairs at Kaffie and Grant middle schools; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, Ms. Adams also has harnessed her unflagging energy
   2-10  to sponsor several Junior Historian chapters, and by allowing
   2-11  students to not only read about local, regional, and state history,
   2-12  but to experience it, she has helped countless youths gain a better
   2-13  appreciation of the past; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, Working tirelessly to improve educational
   2-15  opportunities for at-risk students, Ms. Adams served with
   2-16  distinction on the Site-Based Decision Making Committee at Kaffie
   2-17  Middle School and cochaired the At-Risk Action Team, which
   2-18  coordinated a highly successful mentor program; she was amply
   2-19  rewarded for her efforts when the school received the Texas Blue
   2-20  Ribbon School Award; and
   2-21        WHEREAS, Ms. Adams continues to have a positive effect on
   2-22  education issues through her work with a number of organizations; a
   2-23  valued member of the Texas State Historical Association, the Texas
   2-24  Middle School Association, and the Bay Area Social Studies Council,
   2-25  she also has been active with several Parent-Teacher Associations;
   2-26  and
   2-27        WHEREAS, This esteemed educator has earned numerous accolades
    3-1  throughout her distinguished career; in addition to receiving the
    3-2  district's 20- and 25-Year Service Awards, she was named Texas Top
    3-3  Teacher of History by the Texas State Historical Association and
    3-4  recently earned recognition as Teacher of the Year at Grant Middle
    3-5  School; and
    3-6        WHEREAS, Ms. Adams has served as a positive role model to
    3-7  countless young Texans, helping and encouraging them to reach their
    3-8  highest potentials; more importantly, she has provided a welcome
    3-9  source of stability and consistency to the otherwise hectic and
   3-10  changing world of the middle school student, and she is indeed
   3-11  worthy of special praise and recognition for her exceptional
   3-12  service; now, therefore, be it
   3-13        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   3-14  Legislature hereby honor Nancy Adams for her outstanding career as
   3-15  an educator and congratulate her on her most recent honor as
   3-16  Secondary School Teacher of the Year in the Corpus Christi area;
   3-17  and, be it further
   3-18        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   3-19  prepared for Ms. Adams as an expression of high regard by the Texas
   3-20  House of Representatives.
