                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The many friends and relatives of Gloria Champion
    1-2  Cabaza were deeply saddened by the recent passing of this esteemed
    1-3  woman on April 17, 1995, at the age of 55; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Hidalgo County, Mrs. Cabaza
    1-5  was a descendant of one of the Rio Grande Valley's pioneering
    1-6  families; she was born and raised in Mercedes, and she graduated
    1-7  from Pan American College in 1963; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, For more than 30 years, she nurtured and challenged
    1-9  young minds as a teacher with the Weslaco Independent School
   1-10  District; both as an English instructor and as a special education
   1-11  teacher, she had a profound impact on the lives of countless young
   1-12  people before retiring in 1994; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, She further worked to improve public education as a
   1-14  respected member of the National Education Association, the Texas
   1-15  State Teachers Association, and the Texas Counsel of Special
   1-16  Education, and she took great pleasure in the many close
   1-17  friendships she formed as a member of The Alhambra; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, A devout member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in
   1-19  Weslaco, Mrs. Cabaza enjoyed a warm and loving relationship with
   1-20  her husband, Raul Cabaza, and they were the proud parents of four
   1-21  children; in recent years, the family was blessed with the addition
   1-22  of five grandchildren, all of whom were a continuing source of joy
   1-23  and delight to Mrs. Cabaza; and
   1-24        WHEREAS, In serving her family, her church, and her
    2-1  community, this extraordinary woman gave selflessly to those around
    2-2  her and left them with a legacy of love and compassion by which to
    2-3  remember her; though her presence is gone from us now, her unique
    2-4  spirit will surely live on in the hearts of the many people whose
    2-5  lives she touched; now, therefore, be it
    2-6        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
    2-7  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Gloria Champion
    2-8  Cabaza and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family: to
    2-9  her beloved husband, Raul Cabaza; to her sons, Raul Cabaza III,
   2-10  Aaron J. Cabaza, and David O. Cabaza; to her daughter, Judith C.
   2-11  Perez; to her mother, Clotilde D. Champion; to her brothers, David
   2-12  A. Champion, Sr., and T. M. Champion; to her five grandchildren;
   2-13  and to her many other relatives and friends; and, be it further
   2-14        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-15  prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas
   2-16  House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
   2-17  Gloria Champion Cabaza.
