                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The economic future and well-being of the State of
    1-2  Texas lies with the ability, education, and initiative of its young
    1-3  people; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, It is these individuals who will largely be
    1-5  responsible for transforming Texas into a technologically oriented
    1-6  society; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, The Texas Society of Professional Engineers, through
    1-8  the MATHCOUNTS program, is striving to prepare these students for
    1-9  the challenges ahead; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to
   1-11  encourage seventh- and eighth-grade students to enhance their math
   1-12  skills and to reward these "mathletes" for their superior skill and
   1-13  efforts; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Nationally recognized by the president of the United
   1-15  States, the vice president, and members of Congress, as well as by
   1-16  the secretary of education, the National Council of Teachers of
   1-17  Mathematics, and the National Science Foundation and the Texas
   1-18  State Board of Education, the program receives financial and
   1-19  administrative support from the National Society of Professional
   1-20  Engineers, CNA Insurance Companies, NASA, and others; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Texas MATHCOUNTS derives its financial support from
   1-22  the generosity of such corporate and foundation leaders as
   1-23  NationsBank; 3M; Advanced Micro Devices; Chevron U.S.A., Inc.;
    2-1  Compaq Computer Foundation; Motorola; Sid Richardson Foundation;
    2-2  Southwest Airlines; and Southwestern Bell Foundation; Texas
    2-3  Instruments, Inc.; Texas Utilities Electric; SEMATECH; TSPE
    2-4  Auxiliaries; and TSPE Chapters; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, This year's "Texas Team," consisting of Weiyi Li of
    2-6  College Station, Ben Mathews of Dallas, Matt Mendicino of San
    2-7  Antonio, and Cody Patterson of Weatherford and Coach John Cocharo
    2-8  of Dallas, travelled to Washington, D.C., for the April 28 national
    2-9  MATHCOUNTS competition, where they distinguished themselves and the
   2-10  State of Texas by achieving the rank of second in the nation; now,
   2-11  therefore, be it
   2-12        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the State of
   2-13  Texas, 74th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud these students,
   2-14  their teachers, and their peers for their contribution to the
   2-15  future of Texas; and, be it further
   2-16        RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be prepared for the
   2-17  members of the "Texas Team" as an expression of esteem and respect
   2-18  from the Texas House of Representatives.
