Kennedy will celebrate his 90th birthday on 1-2 May 20, 1995, and to his family and many delighted friends this 1-3 event promises to be a truly joyous and memorable occasion; and 1-4 WHEREAS, During the course of an impressive career that has 1-5 spanned more than six decades, Mr. Kennedy has distinguished 1-6 himself in the fields of journalism, broadcasting, and law and has 1-7 devoted much of his time and boundless energy to the service of his 1-8 community, state, and nation; and 1-9 WHEREAS, For many years, this remarkable gentleman was a 1-10 familiar sight around the corridors of the State Capitol, serving 1-11 as capital correspondent for the Houston Chronicle, Dallas 1-12 Times-Herald, San Antonio Light, Beaumont Enterprise, and Universal 1-13 reporting service; a commentator and news analyst for KTBC in 1939, 1-14 he founded and copublished the Texas State House Reporter, a widely 1-15 respected legislative information and publishing service; and 1-16 WHEREAS, During World War II, Mr. Kennedy put his career on 1-17 hold to answer his nation's call to arms; his tours of duty with 1-18 the United States Army took him to the War Department, Northwest 1-19 Service Command, and the China-Burma-India Theater, and this 1-20 patriotic American ultimately attained the rank of colonel as a 1-21 member of the United States Army Reserves, infantry branch; and 1-22 WHEREAS, On his return to civilian life, Mr. Kennedy embarked 1-23 on a successful career in broadcasting, and today he is known 1-24 throughout the media industry as the founder and principal 2-1 stockholder of the Corpus Christi Broadcasting Company, Inc., and 2-2 of K-SIX Television, Inc.; he is also the president and general 2-3 manager of two television stations, KVTV in Laredo and KZTV in 2-4 Corpus Christi, and of two Laredo radio stations, KSIX and KEXX-FM; 2-5 and 2-6 WHEREAS, In addition to his extraordinary work as a 2-7 journalist and broadcaster, this fine Texan has found the time to 2-8 earn his law degree and practices as an attorney-at-law when not 2-9 handling the day-to-day details of his media companies; he has also 2-10 maintained his ties to the Texas statehouse as a preeminent leader 2-11 in the Democratic Party and has brought his expertise to the 2-12 Democratic State Convention, Democratic State Executive Committee, 2-13 and Democratic National Convention; and 2-14 WHEREAS, As a member of the Texas State Historical Survey 2-15 Committee and Texas Civil War Centennial Commission, Mr. Kennedy 2-16 has helped bring Texas history to life for citizens of the Lone 2-17 Star State and has preserved Texas history for future generations; 2-18 the vice president of the Texas World's Fair Commission, he was 2-19 appointed to both the Texas Sesquicentennial Commission and the 2-20 Texas Centennial of Statehood Commission and is a past director of 2-21 the Texas Historical Foundation; and 2-22 WHEREAS, Determined to make his community a better place in 2-23 which to work, live, and raise a family, Mr. Kennedy has worked 2-24 with countless civic and charitable associations, including 2-25 Goodwill Industries, the Symphony Society of Corpus Christi, and 2-26 the Nueces County Chapter of the American Red Cross; he currently 2-27 is a member of the National Council of United Service Organizations 3-1 and is a Nueces County Alternate for the Coastal Bend Council of 3-2 Governments; and 3-3 WHEREAS, Mr. Kennedy inspires all who know him with his 3-4 energetic spirit, generosity, and enthusiasm for life, and it is 3-5 indeed appropriate that he be given special legislative recognition 3-6 and praise as he reaches a truly significant milestone in his life; 3-7 now, therefore, be it 3-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 3-9 Legislature hereby congratulate Vann M. Kennedy on the momentous 3-10 occasion of his 90th birthday and extend to him warmest best wishes 3-11 for many more happy and rewarding years; and, be it further 3-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-13 prepared for Mr. Kennedy as an expression of highest regard by the 3-14 Texas House of Representatives.
