H.R. No. 847 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Richard Chad Bruns recently earned the title of 1995 1-2 Texas Junior Chess Champion at the state chess tournament held in 1-3 Austin on March 25-26, 1995, and his achievement represents the 1-4 culmination of a dream as well as years of hard work on the part of 1-5 Mr. Bruns; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The son of Richard Bruns and Donna Bruns, this fine 1-7 young man first developed his interest in chess at the age of six 1-8 when a friend gave him a chess set as a birthday gift; self-taught, 1-9 he has considered the game a favorite pastime through the years and 1-10 only began to play the game competitively three years ago; and 1-11 WHEREAS, A member of the Houston Chess Club, Mr. Bruns had 1-12 previously participated at events in California and Illinois before 1-13 deciding to try his luck in the Texas Junior Championship 1-14 tournament; out of 450 players who competed in five rounds of 1-15 competition, Mr. Bruns emerged the winner, making him the top-rated 1-16 high school player in the entire State of Texas; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Currently completing his final year as an honors 1-18 student at Clements High School in Sugar Land, Mr. Bruns has been 1-19 accepted into the petroleum engineering program at Texas A&M 1-20 University for the fall and is hoping to begin his college career 1-21 fresh from the victory he plans to achieve at the National Chess 1-22 Tournament of High School Champions being held this August in 1-23 Concord, California; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Richard Chad Bruns is a source of great pride to his 2-1 parents, to his teachers and many friends at Clements High School, 2-2 and to the citizens of Sugar Land, and it is a pleasure for the 2-3 members of this chamber to join with them in commending him on his 2-4 significant achievement; now, therefore, be it 2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-6 Legislature hereby congratulate Richard Chad Bruns on being named 2-7 the 1995 Texas Junior Chess Champion and extend sincere best wishes 2-8 to him for continued success and happiness in the future; and, be 2-9 it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-11 prepared for Mr. Bruns and his parents as an expression of high 2-12 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
