H.R. No. 848 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Russell Sage Brumbelow comes from a long line of 1-2 distinguished Texans, and his efforts to preserve and chronicle his 1-3 rich family ancestry are indeed deserving of highest praise and 1-4 recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Born January 16, 1905, at his family's homestead in 1-6 Fort Bend County, Mr. Brumbelow quickly developed an abiding 1-7 interest in Texas history and in his family's role in settling the 1-8 Lone Star State; and 1-9 WHEREAS, His great-great-grandfather was George Pentecost, 1-10 one of Stephen F. Austin's original colonists, while another 1-11 great-great-grandfather, William Beard, arrived in Texas with 1-12 Austin's second wave of colonists and acquired a land grant in 1-13 Brazoria County; Mr. Brumbelow's great-grandfather was Andrew 1-14 Jackson Beard, a hero of the Battle of San Jacinto who purchased 1-15 Abner Harris's land grant in 1843; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Under the astute management of Mr. Brumbelow's 1-17 grandfather, Sidney Beard, the Harris land grant would become the 1-18 vast Beard ranch, as Sidney Beard purchased sections of prairie 1-19 land adjacent to the Big Creek grant to expand the family's 1-20 holdings; as each of his children married, Sidney Beard passed on 1-21 40 acres of land, a house, and 20 head of cattle to the newlyweds 1-22 to help them establish their own homesteads; and 1-23 WHEREAS, While still a young man, Mr. Brumbelow began working 1-24 on the family ranch and developed a deep appreciation for the land 2-1 and its history; in 1991, he was awarded Family Land Heritage 2-2 Certificates of Honor from the Texas Department of Agriculture in 2-3 recognition of his family's century of continuous ownership and 2-4 operation of the old Harris land grant, now known as the Brumbelow 2-5 Spread; and 2-6 WHEREAS, The following year, he became a member of the 2-7 Heritage Organization's "Descendants of Austin's Old Three Hundred" 2-8 by virtue of his kinship to George Pentecost, who with his wife was 2-9 one of the first 300 families to settle in Stephen F. Austin's 2-10 colony; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Texans take great pride in the colorful history and 2-12 culture of this state, and the preservation of that heritage is of 2-13 utmost importance to succeeding generations; thus, it is fitting 2-14 that the members of this chamber take this opportunity to recognize 2-15 Mr. Brumbelow for his concerted efforts to document his family's 2-16 many outstanding contributions to the Lone Star State; now, 2-17 therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-19 Legislature hereby honor Russell Sage Brumbelow for his efforts to 2-20 preserve his family heritage and extend to him warmest best wishes 2-21 for success in all his future endeavors; and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-23 prepared for Mr. Brumbelow as an expression of high regard by the 2-24 Texas House of Representatives.
