                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
    1-2  Dr. Marlene Saenz Luna for her scholastic endeavors and
    1-3  congratulate her on her graduation from the University of Houston
    1-4  with a doctorate in education on May 12, 1995; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Destined for academic success at an early age, Dr.
    1-6  Luna graduated from high school two years ahead of her peers and
    1-7  was fifth in her class of 350 students at Alvin High School; a
    1-8  bright and talented student, she received numerous academic honors
    1-9  and was a member of the National Honor Society; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, She graduated from the Jefferson Davis Hospital
   1-11  School of Nursing in 1962 and went on to earn both her bachelor's
   1-12  and master's degrees in nursing from Texas Woman's University; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, She began her career in the fields of nursing and
   1-14  nursing education 33 years ago as a staff nurse at Heights
   1-15  Hospital; well regarded for her professionalism, hard work, and
   1-16  dedication, she advanced through the career ladder and was a
   1-17  nursing instructor before beginning her most recent work as a
   1-18  department chair at San Jacinto College and as a nurse with Allied
   1-19  Health Services and National Health Care; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, A recognized leader in nursing education issues, she
   1-21  chaired the Program and Projects Committee for the Deans and
   1-22  Directors of R. N. Programs in the state and also chaired the
   1-23  Houston-Galveston Area Deans and Directors Council; Dr. Luna
   1-24  currently is a member of the Planning Advisory Committee of the
    2-1  Southern Nursing Association; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, She has presented workshops and papers on a number
    2-3  of vital health care issues, and her paper entitled "A History of
    2-4  Nursing in the Houston Area" was placed in the Jones Medical Center
    2-5  Library archives; she also has contributed her extensive skills to
    2-6  the Baylor College of Medicine, serving as a project assistant on a
    2-7  grant from the Administration on Aging; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, A woman of boundless energies and enthusiasm, Dr.
    2-9  Luna also gives generously of her time, talents, and energies to
   2-10  volunteer with adult literacy programs and to work with individuals
   2-11  who are learning English as their second language; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, Throughout her many endeavors, she has enjoyed the
   2-13  love and support of her husband, Richard A. Luna, and the couple's
   2-14  two fine children, Randolph Alan and Cynthia Ann; over the years,
   2-15  their close-knit family has continued to grow, and the Lunas now
   2-16  enjoy the company of two cherished grandchildren, Randolph Alan,
   2-17  Jr., and Samantha Ann; and
   2-18        WHEREAS, Dr. Luna has demonstrated exceptional dedication,
   2-19  initiative, and determination in successfully pursuing her academic
   2-20  and career goals, and she is indeed deserving of special
   2-21  legislative recognition for her achievements; now, therefore, be it
   2-22        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-23  Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Marlene Saenz Luna on her
   2-24  attainment of a doctorate in education from the University of
   2-25  Houston and extend to her warmest best wishes for continued success
   2-26  in all her future endeavors; and, be it further
   2-27        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-1  prepared for Dr. Luna as an expression of high regard by the Texas
    3-2  House of Representatives.
